Early V8 Towing Capacity?

I read somewhere that early V8 towing capacity was 5000lbs. I got the dealer to print me off a sheet with all the options a 2003 4runner could come with. Under towing capacity it says 5000lbs standard or 7000lbs as optional equipment (for v8) but it doesn't specifically say what is required for the 7000lbs. I also have have sheet which says all the factory options that came with my vin # and one of the options is 'camper/towing package'.

So I would assume my truck is capable of 7000lbs but here's the kicker, when I tried to rent a car trailer from uhaul, their computer said my truck wasn't able to tow the flat bed car carrier with a Corolla on it which wouldn't be close to 7000lbs.

So whats up here?? I checked my hitch out, it looks pretty hefty so I would assume it has the 7000lbs rating but is there a way to tell forsure? I just have a bit of doubt because if early ones had less capacity mine was one of the first made (manu. date: 09/02).

I ran into the same issue trying to rent a car hauler (and dolly) from Uhaul for a Camry. Their system uses vehicle weight to determine towing capability. If your tow vehicle doesn't weigh x amount more (can't recall the exact number they gave me) than what's being towed, they won't rent to you.

When was your 4runner made? In June or July 2003 they changed the hitch setup. If you have one of the early 03's, capacity is less than the later models I believe. I know based on hitch design, the newer ones are capable of safely towing a greater weight.

You can go underneath and read the stickers on it to tell what type of hitch you have. Type IV is the beefed up version. There is an entire tube structure that runs under the rear cross member and is bolted directly to the frame rails as opposed to the Class III hitch that the V6 has which is only mounted to the crossmember.

@ARK my truck was one of the first ones out of the factory (09/02), and its still only had one recall done on it (pedal trim)...I thought they would have had to fix more mistakes than that, gotta love Toyota :)

Heres my hitch, sounds like a class 3 unfortunately. I never really noticed the bolts so I thought is was so beefy because its looks like part of the rear crossmember

Is there additional things required or is it just a hitch?

From the pic, it looks like you have the 5k receiver, which is not capable of handling a weight distribution hitch setup. It is the same oem receiver used on the V6 model. If you want to use a weight distribution hitch, you will need to replace that receiver with a frame mounted receiver. Check for other threads about this, or go to the E-trailer site for more info, and optional receivers available for your vehicle. If you are mechanically inclined, you should be able to install the new hitch yourself, or any competent shop can do it.

Do you have any issue fitting a standard ball mount into the receiver? With mine, a regular ball mount won't fit, it's too long. It hits the tire before the holes line up. I had to chop about 1/2" off so that the hole would line up to fit the pin through. There was an update for the early models that I've read about. I'm not sure it was a full on recall, but I do know that they replaced some of the early hitches. Yours may have been one of them. If a standard ball mount fits, you may have an updated version.

I don't know a lot about the hitches, but have been told from others looking at mine that it seems very weak the way it's mounted.

YES!! talk about a piss me off! lol...When I first towed with my truck I couldn't use the ball mount it came with because there was a 1000lbs ball seized into it and I needed a min 2500lbs ball (towing my corolla on a car dolly). So I ended up buying a new ball mount and then it didn't fit! I ended up dropping the spare tire cuz I was in a bind, which was an excersise in fustration all on its own.

I'll have to do a search for pics but I just can't imagine how they fit a bigger hitch, it's pretty tight on space with the spare tire.

I'm strictly going off of stuff I was told on the hitch, and also going based on memory of a conversation that took place over a year ago, so the details may not be 100%. If I remember correctly, it all has to do with how/where the hitch is mounted, not the physical size. The mid-03+ are mounted differently thus allowing them to handle more weight.

The WD hitch on the V8 is bolted to the frame rails not the cross member like the one found on the V6 as detailed in my previous post.

Agreed, to a point. V8 4runner's up to mid-2003 have a different hitch than all other v8 4runners. This is the hitch in discussion. It's not the same hitch that comes with the v6 from what I can tell (haven't looked at a v6 that closely, I know they don't have the issue with the ball mount fitting which we have).

I did not know that. Excuse my confusion.

No problem. My guess is the early v8 hitch is similar to the v6 and just bolts to the cross member. I need to look at mine to see for sure. I know mine visibly looks different by the way it sits in the bumper compared to others I've seen (weight distributing hitch I'm pretty sure).

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but...
I just purchased a 2003 V8. It has the small hitch mounted to the bottom of the cross member, unlike my previous 2005 v8 (was just totaled) which had the large tube hitch that bolted to both side frame rails AND the cross member which could tow 8000lb.

If I were to remove my current small hitch, and bolt on one of the big tube style hitches, would that make my tow rating 8000lb? Or are there other changes to the 4runner between the years that make my tow rating 5000lb no matter what? (Different tranny cooler, transmission, hitch mounting holes on frame, etc etc)

My 03 runner is one with plastic cladding so it must be one of the first 4th gens produced, before they switched hitch design. Just want to make sure there isn't anything else limiting my towing capacity!

I didn't know there were so many differences between the 03s and newer.

I vaguely remember the brakes getting bigger over the years, but maybe someone else knows the details.

Do you have a transmission cooler? The 4 speed should be OK since a lot of people prefer to tow with the 5-speed in "4" anyway.

The pre VVT-i V8 has less horsepower. You won't break it, but it won't be as fast as a newer one.

It is the v8 which has the 5 speed tranny. I'm assuming it has the transmission cooler like the rest of the newer ones. Other than that, I am hoping there are no other differences between my early year '03 and the newer ones.. (?) other than the cladding of course. I plan on finding a junkyard tube hitch from an 04-05 V8 and swapping that over so that I can tow more

I had the exact set up you had. I had the rear crossmember hitch replaced with a Draw Tite frame hitch-very heavy duty. In order to install the frame hitch, you will need to remove a tow hook and the old hitch. The tow hook was very difficult to remove due to Wisconsin winters. The bolts can break off in the frame if you are not careful and don't use the right tools and procedures.

The vehicle tows my 5000#lb Sea Ray nicely. It is a ltd so it has the built in tranny cooler also. When I get the hydraulic surge brakes on the trailer converted to a disc brake setup and brake controller, it will be great! With that all done and said, I wouldn't want to go too much heavier without problems.

I have a 2007 V8 SR5. I'm trying to find out if it comes with factory-installed tranmission cooler. Do you know if it does, is there an easy way to tell?

I believe I have the factory tow package.

I have a 2005 V8 with the tow package, the tranny cooler I believe is right in front of the radiator when you pop the hood?

At least that is what looks like a tranny cooler..

OK, I'll look tomorrow when it's daylight.

I'm planning on towing a 4,730 lbs dry-weight trailer (never did this before) from Virginia to Texas in the near future. So I want to make sure my 4Runner is up for the task.

I think the towing capacity specs for the 2007 V8 is 7,000 lbs.
...Hope it has a factory transmission cooler.
...Planning to get a trailer brake controller. I'm assuming the cabling and connector are already there for it under the dash, I'll look for that tomorrow also.
...Anything else I need? Bigger brakes all-around for the vehicle itself?

This is the trailer I'm thinking of towing to Texas:
Keystone Passport 23RB Ultra-Lite

Is this the factory transmission cooler (looks like a mini radiator in front of the large main engine radiator)?
