ECT fuse location?

Hello everyone,

I have 99 4Runner 3.4. My ECT light just turned off. I suspect a blown fuse or a bad button. I always have my ECT engaged.

I pulled a few bus fuses to see if anything blew but all were fine.

If I have to replace the button, could someone please post a link to a write up to pulling the center dash out?

PS, any local Runner's here in Nashville TN? I could use a hand on a lift kit..

Best case is the bulb just burned out, since you said you always leave it on.

Pulling the center dash is pretty easy, at least on my '01. It's mostly just clipped on, start by pulling the shroud around the e-brake (which includes the cupholders in the '01) forward. Once that's off you can lift up on the shroud around the shifters, then the trim on the dash just pulls forward. Pretty quick actually. Here's a quick illustration from my '01 when I had it apart. Don't worry about under the steering wheel, I was doing something else there. That doesn't need to come off.

Thanks for the illustration. As I pull everything apart tomorrow, I'm curios if a burned out bulb would enable the button and not let the ECT engage on the dash board..hmmmm we'll find out tomorrow.

Does the ECT function still work when turned on?

Like TRDTeen says, the key would be if it's still acting like the ECT can be turned on, even without the indicator light on the dash. The system will still turn on if that light is burned out.

No the ECT won't turn on at all. That's why I was asking about the fuse location.

Probably want someone with a scanning tool to hook up and see if you've got any codes then. Might help track down what's wrong. I couldn't find an ECT fuse on my '01 anywhere, maybe I missed it.

I have a Scan gauge II already hooked up, no codes found.

I ended up buying a new switch. I had to call the dealer as to the which fuse to check.

so what fuse did you check and where located under dash or under the hood?

The main under the hood fuse is a 7.5a ALT-S and the other in in the cab in dash 7.5a ECU-B

Yes, I see this is an older thread, but chasing down the P0120 code throwing on my 99. First check engine code ever, have owned the truck since 2006.

Some are suggesting first to check the ECTS fuse.

That would only be applicable to Automatic Tranny 4Runners correct?

Yes, manual transmissions don't have the ECT Power mode since you get to control when the transmission shifts

I don't think it is even a possible cause on a slushbox. Not even the same circuit and NOT listed in the FSM as a possible fault.

It's either a faulty TPS or the wiring to it.

So did this fix the ect. What is the part number and how much was it. I have mine out for the last 7yrs and never bothered with it. I checked the fuse locations you described and mine are fine too. Mines an 02 sport.

Ok guys so my ECT light on the dash stopped working. I took the dash apart and swapped the ECT bulb (which was burnt out) for the OD bulb and put the dash back together. Started up the truck and still no ECT light.

Now I haven't been able to tell if ECT is working or not because I live in the city and it actually isn't that easy to tell.

I looked at a few threads and at least someone mentioned a fuse and also replacing the switch. What I haven't done yet is repull the dash and check if the now switched bulb also burned out since the swap.

Please advise (help a brother out) where is the fuse located for ect , if there is one...

And two, should the next thing I replace be the switch?
