ECT vs NON-ECT Gas Mileage?

Not sure if this has been covered before and if it has, forgive me for this post.

I have been using my ECT button in the on position for quite some time. While cleaning my rig up, I guess I inadvertently pushed it and have been driving in "Non-ECT" mode for a few weeks. I noticed a big drop in gas mileage on the Non-ECT mode...which brings me to my question:

Have any of you experienced better gas mileage in Non-ECT mode? I read where allegedly the Non-ECT is supposed to change transmission shift points and improve mileage. In my case, that was just the opposite of what happened.

I believe I have noticed this also. When ECT is on the shift points are later, which means higher rpms, which usually means less fuel mileage. But I noticed with it off I am holding the gas longer and pressing it more to get downshifts or to get the vehicle up and going. This makes me believe I use more gas because of that reason.
