Electrical Issue?

Edit, wrong diag

Okay, So I've reviewed the Headlight Diagram, Turn Signal Diag, and illumination Diag. The only thing the three have in common is the "Combo Switch", being your turn signal switch. The grounds all appear to be separate and the power for the lights originates from that switch.

It would be worth pulling the turn signal switch out of the truck and fully disassembling it. You can check and clean all of the contacts. When finished, smear fresh Dielectric grease on everything that makes an electrical contact and put it back together. Could be a cheap fix.

I did already pull the switch apart. But I didnt really clean it. I can try that.

I im burning through fuses like crazy. When the fuses are good I have the above mentioned symptoms. When they blow the blinkers and driving lights are just gone. The headlights are still fine.

I was driving in down town Madison today when I lost my turn signals again. I REALLY need to get this figured out as its becoming dangerous. Again I have spent several hours following the wires and havent found anything.

Does this sound like a short to you guys? Or should I replace the switch? Stockwell has one for sale right now.

I'd tell ya to drive down to my house and you can swap mine and see if it fixes it.

Instead of wasting money on fuses you should buy a circuit breaker turn on your circuits that you are having problems with start unplugging stuff untill your problem goes away. Then trace through that circuit and you will find your problem.

Just a thought. I hooked up my trailer a couple months ago and found that lights were shorted due to some serious corrosion. Every time I turned on the blinker it would turn on and off all lights.

If you haven't done it yet I'd look at your tails/blinkers crossing with your head light circuit.

Well I can rule out the switch. I got one used from stockwell and nothing changed. So on we go . . .

Can you explain this a little more? I have no idea how this works and what the process entails. But if it can help me resolve this Im willing to give it a try

Thanks for the advice. Where is this located?

If you have a "Flat 4" trailer hook up. I would start there. If you have water intrusion in your tail lights it's possible it should be shorting it across the circuit. It's hard to say with putting my hands on it and using a fluke to troubleshoot.

Which fuses do you keep blowing for which circuits?

Sorry, I got really sick for the past four days. I hadnt stepped foot outside my house until today.

The two fuses that keep blowing are the 10A "turn" in the cabin fuse box, and the 10A "tail" fuse in the engine bay.

Well guys, now the issue has escalated. Now as soon as I turn the blinker, both of the below fuses blow, every time, without fail. I hadnt done anything with this over the past 5 days as I was very sick. Today this is what I discover.

I looked over the wires in the back again, then changed out the left rear wiring harness as I had a spare that blcktpgsr gave me when I bought my tail lights from him over a year ago. I also changed the bulbs just to be sure. No change. The guy at auto zone said maybe I have a short somewhere else that's causing the issue. I just dont know where to look. So I have no turn signals or driving lights, and I drive to work every morning at 545 am while its still dark out. Have you ever tried driving around town with no turn signals? Now try driving a black suv in the dark, with no turn signals or driving lights. Ive already been honked at several times, pulled over once, and had a few people roll down their windows next to me to tell me I have no tail lights. That was when I could at least get my turn signals to work. Now those are gone too. Besides being illegal, this is a big safety issue, and that my main concern. I dont even feel comfortable driving to the grocery store a few miles away

So I am getting desperate here. Just for clarification these are the fuses I keep blowing

EDIT: The fuses blow when I turn the left signal, not the right. The issue has involved the lift side from the beggining.

Kurtis, where is this circuit located?

Have you tested the voltage at the alternator yet? Could be an over voltage situation from a bad regulator.

No, and I dont know how to do that. Is that something autozone could do?

I suppose so. If you have a multimeter, test the voltage at the battery terminals with the motor running. It should be ~14.4v. If you see anything north of that the regulator is faulty.

Ok. Unfortunatley I dont have a multimeter. While Ive done a lot mechanical work on my truck, the only electrical work Ive done (ever on any vehicle) includes hooking up my fog lights and changing bulbs throughout. Fortunately autozone is lik a quarter mile from my house.

You may be on to something. I did just recently change my battery. However I thought for certain that I changed it shortly after these issues began. But my memory could be failing me and theres a chance the issues bagan after I changed it.

Is it common for a new battery to ruin an old regulator?

Reverse that statement. A bad alternator may have killed your last battery and you haven't fixed it yet.

Actually my previous battery never went bad. I replaced it as preventative maintenance as it was like 5 years old. And wouldnt a bad alternator other electrical issues?

I just had autozone check the battery. He said it was at 12.28 v and the battery was 100% charged. According to him the alternator is good. Is the voltage regulator built into the alternator?
