I've been researching the idea behind swapping a rear diff. w/the electronic diff lock into my 93, and havent had any luck. Anyone ever done this type of swap?:thanks:

I have tried google, and all I've found is swapping the the third member, and doing some mods to the axle housing. I can do that no problem but would rather just swap the entire rear so in case something were to happen I would have a back up. Just wondering if anyone on here has done the swap, and if so other than the suspension parts, if there is any other changes that have to be made.

Hmm. Not sure about that one. You would have to weld new link tabs on the axle. I dont think later year 4runners use the same 4link design, and tacomas are leaf spring. Plus its about 1.5 inches wider.

I think it would just be easier to put in the 3rd and modify the housing.

Well that was one of my concerns was the axle width, I'll probably just try the third member swap instead. Thanks for the advice.

The diff doesn't know or care about the axle width. As long as the axle shaft diam and spline count are the same, it's a go.

Yea i know that the axles themselves could care less, i was referring to the entire axle assembly, differential, rear end, rear axle housing assembly, or whatever other name you want to call it.
