ELM327 Not connecting to my trucks ECU?

Hi

I just received my ELM327 OBDII BT connector and have the torque app. I am able to pair the device to my phone and the application however I'm getting no information from the trucks computer. (01 4x4 SR5)

In the 'Adapter Status Information' it's reporting the adapter can't to the vehicle ECU. On the adapter itself all it has is a red light.

Anyone else here have one of these and any experience? I've scanned the web with not much luck. I"m thinking it's just a faulty adapter and I should exchange but thougth I'd check here first.

What you need to do is try the adapter on another vehicle and a different scanner on the truck. There is an OBD fuse that is worth checking.
 
Reviving an old thread. Request advise.

I recently got the ELM327 device from. Unfortunately it does not works on my truck which is a 97 model manufactured in 96, not sure if OBDII was not standard that time. The same adapter works fine on a 2006 Civic.

Was anyone able to use the ELM327 module on their 97 runner SR5 successfully?
 
I'd actually like to know if anyone's Torque app is still working with their 4runner, and if it is, when was the last time you updated the app and what adapter do you have.

I have the expensive scan tool adapter, and I think it was the update before last that seems to have broken the app for me. It just won't connect anymore.

Your 4runner supports OBDII. What might be happening is that your ELM327 device is trying a different protocol than what your 4runner supports.

Toyota was using SAE J1850 VPW in 96-97, and switched over to ISO 9141-2 in 98. My '98 uses the latter, and I've had at least one OBD2 module unable to talk to the truck until I switched to ISO 9141-2.

What specific device is it?
 
I have an ELM 327, works flawlessly on my 2000. I don't use torque thought. I run an app called dash command for the iPhone, and my ELM 327 is the wifi model.

Oh yes, it keeps on scanning various protocols and never gets any value.

You know a lot about this adapters and the protocols, which once do you suggest I should get for my truck?

The mini-ELM327 BT modules seem to have a lot of bum units. That said, I picked up one from Amazon, and it seemed to work fine.

But I have also heard of people with broken plugs or wiring. You might want to try borrowing a scanner from a local NAPA or Schuck's before buying another.

If you can connect to the module with your computer, you can use a serial terminal to force it to use a particular protocol instead of scanning. That might clear things up, but it might be a bit involved if you're not familiar with serial terminals, and I'm probably not going to be of much help to you there.
