Emergency service in my car - How do I turn it off?

Dealer does not understand why it is not working properly...so they default to "they can't detect any problems". Toyota has not heard of the issue before so they refer me to the dealer...

The service is subscription-based and is not required safety equipment.

The system uses the GPS to locate and mobile signal GSM i believe to send and receive data and voice signal. I believe it can also send limited signals through both the GPS system and the XM Radio - but I cannot confirm this other than by making the assumption that the XM is a prerequisite to the SOS system and the GPS system is already setup for EPIRB reception. Believe it or not some of us actually pay significant $ to have EPIRBs. I don't think you can disable the vehicle side without disabling the vehicle. Why? Because Toyota Financial and other probably lenders rely on the service to find and repossess vehicles. The documents that you receive with the vehicle explain that this is one of its authorized uses.

If you don't like it. Buy an older 4runner.

You're going to want to stock up on some older vehicles because there's going to be even more integrated "black box" stuff on newer vehicles that track even more data points. Just look at how Tesla was able to refute a bad review using data from the test car's black box.

The service tends to activate randomly while I am driving and make announcements. Can't stop it nor does the dealer detect a problem...So, need to disable it.

OK, I'm curious enough to ask. My '14 had active SafetyConnect for a year, and I let it lapse after the non-charge subscription ran out. In all that time, I received not a single message or announcement from the system. There was a red/green light to indicate satellite connection, but that's it.

What random announcements are you getting?

The system uses the cell phone transmitter for the system. It does not transmit through GPS or Sirius/XM.

How much do you want to bet that as soon as the signal isn't blocked any more that it will establish a connection and upload all the data it couldn't previously? Provided that's actually what it's doing of course...

Fortunately it's not available in Canada. If it's worthwhile to you, you could pick up a Limited in Canada and trade in yours and not have to worry about this feature. We don't get EnTune either so I assume these both use the same data connection.

On that note, might be worth exploring the link between the two to see if removing one would impact the other. (Just my Canadian $.02, so $0.002 USD)

I asked to disconnect a service I do not want to use....you and others made it into something it is sooo not. It looks to me that you have the tracking idea on your mind and have pushed this whole post in that direction...

You asked for a solution that people don't seem to have. The response was to ask why you needed it, in the hopes of maybe finding a way to achieve that goal. The original posts intention was seeking a way to disable the service so that it does not make its announcement. An incorrect intent was projected onto the post by someone whose knee-jerk insight was to see the post as a disclosure of bad intent through disabling technology that potentially tracks me. So, it rapidly turned into a discussion of privacy and technology.

Unfortunately, the rank-and-file-progressive thinking seems to dominate most people now...as if personal privacy is something that should be considers a ridiculous expectation and something we should surrender.(and again - FYI - this was not the posts original intent...)
