i have a little bit of experience working on jeeps.
mainly on my friends' jeeps since my 4runner hasnt broken down yet
the older jeeps are pretty straight forward to fix and I would venture that they are alot easier to fix in comparison to our 4runners.
the older ZJ's were indeed pretty reliable. probably because they used the Aisin transmissions coupled with the AMC motors. the combination proved to be fairly reliable IMO.
i'd say the same thing about the wranglers as well, the older ones that are similar to the ZJ's did perform decently and were reliable.
i think both vehicles in their stock configuration would prove just fine as a EOTWAWKI vehicle.
and to be fair, they did mention the hilux which is on a similar platform to the 4runner
edit: also, i assume that there are more jeeps in various configurations in north america than their are 4runners. since chrysler/jeep/dodge tends to use similar parts across the board (i.e. pentastar in the wrangler, grand cherokee, and dodge journey, etc) it would be easier to find parts to fix your bug out vehicle.
us guys in the 4runners would just drive by and ask if they need assistance

So if I understand this correctly- the point here is that you get up one morning, and as you are drinking coffee, look out of the window and notice that the world is ending. You then get into one of these vehicles and drive away--umm to where? Isn't the world ending- meaning the WHOLE world- including you and the car that you are driving?
Ohh and to add- the Toyota Hilux is in there and from what I have read on here - those are similar to the 4Rs right?

Yeah that solar vehicle would be great, IF after armageddon all the roads were completely flat, pristine, and clear of debris and dead vehicles, yeah right... *sarcasm*

Of course Zombies will not walk among us but its a tongue and cheek title for a serious issue: Being prepared.
If I knew for sure that my house will flood next Tuesday, preparing would be easy. Same with any sort of disaster. The trouble is that nobody knows. So, we use Zombies as a catch all fun phrase for preparing for the worst. If one is prepared for Zombies one is prepared for pretty much anything.
Besides, how else would one answer why one "needs" a M14, HK93 AND a AR15?

For any that live and work in the DC Metro area, being prepared is a necessity. I remember the traffic during 9/11 and all subsequent "evacuations" due to snow.
Remember Snowmagedden in DC last February? I left around the same time everyone did....too late, but managed to use my off-the-beaten path escape route and made it back home in about an hour.
Eight hours later I was watching the news seeing all the "unprepared" people still stuck in their cars on the roads and highways. Nuff Said.
Civil unrest is always a possibility when an economy tanks, food prices soar, and *GASP* gas prices skyrocket. People do crazy things when they can't afford food. I've seen it in many parts of the world and its naive to think that it won't happen here. A lot of "prepared" folks took notice of what happened during and after "Katrina." So don't think it won't happen here...it has in the past and it probably will in the future.
DC is already a terrorist target and we already know it takes very little to cause a panic and traffic jam here. IMHO, the police is only useful for their body bags. If you want to protect yourself and your family, you gotta do it yourself and don't count on law enforcement to help...they usually have their hands full during an emergency situation. When I'm on the run with my family, my 12 gauge, 9mm and 7.62x39 rounds are my protection

I'm still looking to add a front grill that's usable to push other cars out of the way since I can't afford that Marauder yet.
