Engine air filter

Hello again,

I have an '04 4Runner SR5 V8. I'm getting ready to replace my engine air filter. The process looks pretty straight forward. Any suggestions as to what brand of filter to buy? I'd rather not go to the stealership to buy it.

It's very straight forward, just a couple of clips. If you're looking for just a stock replacement filter, go with a Fram. You can get them at Walmart, or any auto store

Very easy maintenance. Four clips total, two on front of box, two on the back. Pull the old one, maybe wipe out or vacuum any loose debris, then pop in the new one. I used a Wix filter, although I don't think the brand matters a whole lot...just as long as a new filter is put in.

You can get pretty good deals on Toyota engine air filters on ebay or Amazon. My second choice and one that I currently have in now is a Wix.

I went ahead and replaced the filter with a Fram in under 5 minutes. I appreciate all the advise.

Upgrade # 1 is at a min a reusable cotton gauze OEM replacment plug in

and really why not any brand CAI....let that V8 breathe

I bought a Denso engine air filter from Rock Auto for about $10.

Should pretty much OEM level stuff.

I change ahead of schedule now that I do a lot of desert driving... at that price I can keep a couple on hand in the garage.

Get one, run it for 1000 miles in the desert, then come back and ask me the same question...

They seem to do fine on coarse particle filtration, but they don't filter as well as paper on fine dust.

I can get a Denso / OEM filter for $10, vs the cost of a K&N and the time, labor, and chemicals to maintain and clean them. They can also be easily damaged during the maintenance/cleaning process which means you should get another filter, but most don't realize and keep using a compromised filter.

They claim to be a performance filter with a lower pressure drop across the filtration media, but that comes at a cost, and that cost is filtration performance.

To make matters worse, its not like the added air flow does anything for our engines as we can't tune for it anyways so you give up protection for no gain.

No such thing as a free lunch...
