Engine cranks 3 times too long

As someone suggested earlier, try cycling the ignition on and off a few times before cranking when it's hot, let the fuel pump prime and pressurize the fuel system. If this has no effect, you can pretty well rule out fuel issues.

When was the last time you replaced the spark plugs?
 
I'd love to know if anyone who has this problem has tried using an inline spark tester and having someone else crank the engine while observing to see if spark is present? Someone on YT replaced both the pump and FPR and still got the same long cranking symptoms, which leads me to believe it is spark related and not fuel. The only way I know how to rule out the latter is to test the pressure on the rail, which is not that easy.
 
Alright I still am having this issue/ Her is what I have done. Somethings just needed to be done anyway.

new sparkplugs
new battery
cleaned IAC
cleaned MAS
cleaned TB
fuel injector cleaner in gas
sprayed seafoam thru TB while running

So basically it starts great after sitting all night or even after a couple of weeks. Once driven and parked for 10 min or more, it cranks long before starting. A way to get it to fire quickly is... Crank for a couple of seconds, allow it to sit a few seconds and crank again and it fires right up.
 
I know this might be a silly question but you said you replaced sparkplugs...did you replace the wires too? For many miles do you have on your truck? I recently replaced my ignition coils and my crank time went from 3 sec. to 1.
 
I have 205,000+ miles on it.
It runs great and idles great, other than this issue. This issue is 100% consistant.

The wires are denso and fairly new.

Crank position sensor. Hmmm, strange that it is fine when cold. I'll have to figure out where it is now.

Coils packs. Where did you get and how much for new ones?

Zero codes. I'll check my ScanGauge again to be sure.
 
My 2000 model does exactly what you have described. Just changed plugs and wires with ngk/denso...no improvement. Have cleaned the MAF and TB...no improvement.

Runs perfect other than this. No codes in ECM

This is EXACTLY what my truck does. I just had it parked for 3 weeks, no starts. Turned the key yesterday and it fired right up. Drove it for 10 minutes, turned it off. Tried to start it 15 minutes later....long cranked until I let off. Tried again, and it started after a couple seconds. Gerdo if one of us solves this, I guarantee it'll be the same for the other.
 
I got them new from Rockauto.com for 23 each. They were on close out pricing. Normally they run 45-60 each. You may get lucky and find a sweet deal. First couple times I looked they were full price and I didn't want to pay that much.

x2. I've been saving up all my work on the 4runner, in the hopes that I'll have a clear plan of attack for this long crank problem before I start into all the fixes and upgrades that need done.
 
Here is what a friend of mine sent me to check too.

My money is on the Crank Position Sensor (Crank Angle Sensor). Check the hot temps on the CPS before buying the cam sensor.

This sensor is down by the thermostat.
My readings were...
Engine temp is 136* and the resistance read 2.368 and after taking the reading it was a hard start.
Engine temp is 200* and the resistance read 2.554 and after taking the reading it was a hard start.

Just for kicks I'll check the cold reading tomorrow after work.
 
The cam position sensor did NOT fix it.

The next thought is a bad gas cap. Maybe the vent is plugged and not allowing the tank to breath properly. So the cap is just open a little.

I'm out of town and not driving it but my wife is. She has taken some short trips (that always cause the issue) and doesn't seem to have the issue. Only time will tell.
 
Yep, my truck does this too. I'm starting to think that they all do? :)

My last 3rd gen did NOT do it though.

Have you done anything with your starter?
 
I am getting a CEL code now, P0440 Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction. I think it's from having the gas cap loose. I've closed the cap tight again. I'll reset the codes and see if it comes back.

The starter is fine, replaced a year ago and cranks great.

the igniter controller? Now where is that? I wonder if I can test it some how.
