Engine dies after jump starting it

Hello,

2001 T4R SR5 243K

My Issue started back in September, but may have been going on longer. But I was unable to start it in the morning. It had been getting colder here and this was coinciding with below 30 nights. But every morning I needed some kind of jump.(I was getting jumps from neighbors, but then got a portable jumper)

About two weeks after this, I replaced the alternator and it seemed to be working a little better. Was really only colder nights where it wouldn't start. This was in Mid November.

Yesterday morning and was able to jump start it, but when I pulled the jumper cables off, the dashboard would die and a few seconds later the engine would die. I got a new battery and was able to get it running. I drove around most of the afternoon with no real issue.

Today was the same thing. I could jump it, but it would die when I pulled the jumper cables off of it.

Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Stop throwing money at it. Take some time to troubleshoot. Jump start only helps if the charging system is working properly. Asking an alternator to recover a dead battery is a big ask. Most alternators do not have a 100% duty cycle. This means they wear out quickly when dealing with a depleted battery. What is your battery voltage with everything off? Voltage while running? Amp draw with everything off? Do Not test amperage draw when running with an inline meter. Vehicle engines normally draw 20amps while running. Most meters are rated to 10amps. Not sure on the starter initial amp draw. Cold engine is probably around 100amps.

How are the battery cables and connection points? It's usually possible to use jumper cables to bypass the vehicle battery cables. Lets say the running voltage is 12.2V. Using jumper cables to bypass the in vehicle battery cables brings the voltage to 13.7-14.2V. Battery cables would be the culprit.

Not that moving it to correct gen would help the OP but it is a 3rd gen plus 240+ k . MAGNUM to the head might be quicker !!!:mod::sad:

Follow up.

Took it to my mechanic, electrical issues are out of my wheelhouse.

Turned out to be a bad alternator.

Best

I believe you are correct, but I am unable to locate the parasitic loss. Using a multimeter, there appears to be no drain. By again, I do agreee there is loss somewhere. I've pulled all of the lighters and try to keep everything off when I shut it down.
