my 91 3.0L v6 has a problem passing emission tests and the engine light is on.
-I want to know how to look up the codes for the check engine light. it comes on after a few minutes of driving. i don't notice a difference in the drive ability.
i'm up in canada, they don't do that here.
is it an obd2 connector? obd1?is there a manual way to find out the codes? i would rather spend 100 dollars on the code checker then 40 to go to the local garage.
sorry, Im not sure the correct name of the tool, I hear they are expencive, I know theres a website somewhere that lists the code, sorry I cant be more help, hopefully someone will chime in with the link
I ssem to recall seeing something in the Haynes manual that shows how to check the code by using a piece of wire (paperclip) and connecting two terminals from the code reader hookup.
I've done this on some of my past cars and what it does is when you make the connection and then turn the key on without starting the engine the check engine light will flash the codes.
I can check my Haynes manual later to see if this method can be used with the 4runner and then I'll get back to you.
I took a quick look at my haynes while at home and I didn't see the method in there.
I do remember seeing it somewhere. Here's a website I found that describes the same idea in general terms and then another thread from another site that seems to get into more detail.
Our trucks are ODB1 so a newer reader won't work but you don't need it anyway. As mentioned just short out the terminals int he diagnostic box under the hood and the engine light will flash the code at you. I'm not sure what the terminals on the 3.0 but they're the same ones you short to set the timing. It should be on your under hood sticker which ones to use.
Then once you have the code just search the internet for the code. You can probably find it in the archives here or on Yotatech too.
i got two codes, 42 and 52.
I'm pretty sure its the speed sensor and a knock sensor.
my odometer stopped working a little while ago, I'm not sure about the knock sensor.
does anyone know if you can use the jumperwire method while driving the truck? my code is not stored in the computer and the light only comes on when the engine is running.
