Engine lugging????

Since I have bought my 4runner with 56k on it there has been sort of a lugging issue when coming out of turns. When stopped at a light when i go to take off everything feels normal however when it shifts into 2nd gear it seems to "bog" down temporarily. Than takes off just fine.... Kinda confusing me. Higher octane fuel i.e. Premium it is not as noticeable but is still there. It also does it when making turns it seems to "lug/bog down" while coming out of downshifting to lower gears. Those are pretty much the only time it "bogs down" it also seems to have a slight hesitation when flooring it.... However after the hesitation it runs like a bat outta hell!!!! Any ideas?

It does not seem to have a dead miss like a fouled plug or anything. So I am a little confused and am seeking some enlightenment from the 4runner gods as I am new to the 4runner world.

But I will say even with this relatively small issue I LOVE MY 4RUNNER!!! The best vehicle purchase of my life I will always have a T4R for now on.

If it were me, i'd start from the following in this (cheapest to expensive) order:

1. Reset ECU - if it doesn't work, go to next and so on and so forth.
2. Pour BG 44K (Gas Treatment) - Do not refill until you're close to empty so you can feel the difference. Again if it doesn't work, go to next.
3. Flush transmission fluid (if you want add BG 44K Transmission additive).
4. Tune-up, replace spark plugs.

If you done all four above and it still bogs down, accept my deepest apologies. Take it to your trusted dealer. But at least you got your fuel system cleaned, tranny flushed and new spark plugs.

:snacker:

Is this happening when you are stopped are when you are turning and have your foot on the gas? if its the first one thats just the brakes and if its the second than its your VSC. you can turn it off and that'll help however if it is a pre 2008 than it is just watered down and not completely off.

It happens when I am coming out of a stop with my foot on the gas and turning. It also does it when coming out of a turn and getting back on the gas. When it does it coming out of a turn and getting back on the gas it almost seems like it doesnt know which gear it wants to select. Does that make sense?

MikesToy: I have ran Lucas fuel injector cleaner through it on a couple tanks with PLUS fuel. Is that the same as doing BG 44K?

BG 44 does the same job as the lucas. maybe try turning your VSC off and see if that makes a difference. I can only relate to the situation you describe is when I have the VSC on and floor it. do any lights come on when your problem happens? like the tire skids or a VSC light?

cheers to VSC!:yesyes:

my 4.0 slugged into traffic and once parallel'd it took off (just like brake torqing)

Dont know if this will help -but my brothers Montero's tranny was acting differently -he later found out that they used the incorrect Tranny fluid. Incorrect fluid can cause your tranny to shift at different points.

Hesitation. Could be many causes. My '08 V6 will hesitate on most any 2 gear downshift; annoying as hell. I recall on my 3rd gen that there was an adjustment that you could make to the throttle linkage but, now that I think of it, are we drive-by-wire? If so, then it would take a tune adjustment to fix if it's a throttle response issue. The possibilities are endless...

I haven't tried Lucas but i had good results from BG 44K. My 4R drives like new tho it's already 7 yrs and 1 month old.

my 2009 V6 does the same thing. Once I turn the VSC off it doesn't do that anymore. Does anyone know if there is an adjustment for that or is it something that just comes with the VSC?? Seems like it just happens just after you get going once it tries to shift into second, after that it runs great.

I see you have a K&N intake. I would start by unhooking the battery. While the battery is unhooked, clean the MAF (mass air flow sensor). Take out the K&N intake and re-install the OEM intake. If you don't have the OEM intake just wash the K&N filter real good. Make sure it is completely dry before re-installing but do not oil the filter, not yet anyway. Hook up the battery cables then drive it normal for a week to see what happens.

Cleaned the K&N than "LIGHTLY REOILED IT" let it dry for a couple hours, cleaned the MAF, Reset the ECU. RUNS AWESOME NOW!!! Thanks everyone!!!

I'm still gonna change the spark plugs next week just for good measure
