Engine Noise

Any other people experiencing this noise? Just want to really make sure all 4Runners do it and is normal.

So far, noise descriptions I've read are:

- like wobbly WRRR WRRR WRRR sound
- like a two gears turning on each other, but with half of the gear broken and so it makes wobbly WRRR WRRR sound noise
- has a diesel engine sound characteristics
- can hear it more in Drive than in Park
- can hear it more when all doors and windows are closed
- does not hear it at initial startup
- sound is more evident after about 5 min from cold start
- sound seams to almost go away (but can still hear it) after about 30 minutes of driving
- some reported sound came on at 800 miles, some at 4000 miles, etc. so it looks like brand new off the lot does not have it.

Please post here if you also experince this issue (even a quick short post) just so that we'll hve an idea on how many people are getting this issue. Also put how many miles you have when sound started.

If you don't have this issue and you happen to read this thread, please post that you're not getting this and also and put your mileage.

I have also experinced the same noise. I have a 2011 SR5 with about 2k miles on it. It was there from when the truck was new. I seem to hear it more after driving for about 5-10 mins, only at idle, in drive.

Not sure we are hearing the same noise.
Mine TE developed this similar noise when shift is in drive or reverse with truck in stationary(applied brake). It is kind of a grinding noise. It can be heard easily when windows rolled down and in a close garage.
The sound become louder when after driving for a while.
The sound magnifies a bit at first acceleration then disappears.
I am suspecting it coming from Torque Converter after did some search online.
Any ideas from others?

2010 2WD model with about 5600 miles. Noticed a "whrrring" noise around 2000. Not there on start up, is there after 15 mins of driving, more pronounced in drive.

At my 5k service I mentioned it and they blame it on valve train noise.

It's annoying.

Reviving this because I have been hearing this for the last thousand miles or so, and my wife actually commented that the truck has gotten louder. I just hit 10k. My noise is pretty much how Maui73 breaks it down in post #41. The first thing I thought was rough idle, but the rest of the truck is smooth and the needle is a rock at idle.

I liken it to a distant diesel engine, and I do hear it under the hood, but more prominent in the cabin with the windows closed. It sounds almost as if there is second engine under the hood running at the same time as the real engine. The engine itself seems to shake a little in sync with the noise. When I'm driving, the noise seems to smooth out and blend in with the rest of the engine noise, but comes back when the rpm's go down, like when coming to a stop. I hear it in D as well as P when not under acceleration.

Hopefully I don't sound like a wacko describing it. I'm not really a mechanic type person and I'm tired. I didn't have this noise in my '07 TE. I'm bringing the truck in for 10k service in a few days, I'll see what they say. It is reassuring that I'm not the only one who has this noise. I'm also tending to trust what Harper7 says. Though I may do the rubber grommet mod just for kicks.

You're not a wacko at all Kraeken.....I experience the same exact thing in my 2011 SR5...sounds faintly like a diesel does....a slow "purr" and "chugging" noise.

I'm tempted to do that grommet mod. I worry that anything altered would void any warranty if something else associated to the fuel system goes bad. Even if the mod is obviously not a fault.

Still, I bought a new vehicle with hopes that I wouldn't be turning any wrenches on it for some time.

Not sure I'm doing this right I just joined the club, but I'm trying to ask a question regarding fuel pump/return line noises changing the harmonics and resonating out fender well because of the full skid plate being it's a TE. Was told this is normal from dealer just not sure if it is and if a skid plate can really change the sounds of something like that but the sound is almost like a spray paint can sound or a slurping sucking sound.

A. Musicians
B. Engineers or Physicists
C. Really good mechanics

My previous 2006 4Runner also had the drumming noise at idle. I was disappointed that the new 2010 4Runner did the same thing, but since I knew the source of the noise I went ahead and fixed it on the new 4Runner. The noise is generated by the pulsating fuel line which then transmits pulses to the driver side wheel well and for some reason it would resonate the pulses as a drumming noise into driver side cabin area. There are 2 brackets that hold the fuel line to the wheel well that are easily accessible through the driver side wheel well opening. What I did was isolate the mounting bolt with rubber grommets that are readily available at the Home Depot. I'll get some pictures up when I get a chance and also put up some kind of write up.

Thank you dcon, this is great, I was looking for this solution for a long time, replaced both fuel pressure damper and fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rails but it did not help with the issue. I knew the noise was coming from the fuel lines attached to the chassis. I will buy the parts and try the fix asap

Hey Guys, New to the website. As Harper stated roller rocker assemblies are noiser. Having 4 per cylinder adds to it.
However I think this noise is from the Fuel injectors. You can take care of this by adding and upper cylinder lubricant to your fuel tank.
Lucas, Redline and Amsoil all make one. Personally I use marvel mystery oil. 4 ounces per 10 gallons. So 9 ounce to you fuel 23 gallons
will take care this. You can buy a gallon of Marvel for around $18 at Walmart. I run this in my 2018 Limited.

This noise coming from the roller rockers sounds fishy to me as my 2004 Mach 1 has 32 of them and it is dead silent. But I do have the same diesel sounding noise coming from my 2021. It's been to the dealer twice for the noise and I', told that this is just normal noise for the 1GR. So, I have just had to ignore it even though it sounds like the beginnings of piston slap as it goes away once the pistons heat up.

Mine to, and I have had loose wrist pins and all kinds of stuff over the years to know what doesn’t sound right.

I read here it’s normal and since it stops when warm, I just take it easy when cold and go on.

I have read more than one comment if there’s any noticeable difference to using 91+ gas, it’s less dieseling sound when cold. I cannot confirm as I have just not paid attention. I do know it still does it with 91, just not sure if less.

I have a 2015 limited. It has been a noisy engine since new compared to my other vehicles. I run premium fuel and routinely run injector cleaner. It helps, but the T4R is just a noisy engine. I can live with it because it is my wife's and she loves it, plus it has not given me a hint of trouble in 50k miles.
