Engine Rebuild in Process

So I bit the bullet and had my engine and trans pulled to have them both rebuilt. After thinking long and hard, I decided to keep it simple (the stupid is implied) and go with a stock rebuild. No supercharger, no headers, goal here is to be as reliable and fun as the day it was born.

My rig is a 98 SR5, 3.4L, A/T, 4X, with almost 280K and I call it Woody.

That said, I am breaking the bank to go OE and replace as many of the wearable items I can. Below is a list of what's been done and purchased so far - PLEASE let me know I you think I'm missing anything!

  • Engine - complete rebuild, including new heads, sensors, oil pump, timing components
  • Transmission- rebuilt with new shift kit
  • Fuel Tank dropped and new fuel pump installed
  • New Motor Mounts
  • New A/C Lines and Power Steering Lines
  • All New Filters
  • New Radiator
  • New OE Fuel Injectors
  • Replacing All Rubber

The engine should be ready to be installed next week.

Starter contacts or a new Denso starter?
I would also try to replace the heater control valve/hoses.
Im sure you got new hoses for the engine oil cooler.

Who did you go with for a rebuild? or your doing it yourself

yota shop has a pretty good list of things they do when rebuild

they have 3 levels you can purchase, but they seem to have as close to new condition IMO but I'm sure other engine builders out there have good quality.

I kind of messed up my #5 cylinder bad enough to call it quits with my motor... I ordered a dressed long block so hopefully it will be pretty decent when it arrives.

I have been working on re-doing my truck for a while now... but whenever I have to remove something I take it and get it sandblasted and powder coated before I put it back on, expensive yes but it looks like brand new and hopefully will keep the rust down. if you have the time and $ to spend do it right and re-paint if possible. just helping you spend more money. :)

Great info Sleepy, thank you. Based on the link I went with Level 3, including the Aisin pumps and OE timing components.

I went with a local rebuilding I know and trust. I haven't gone the powder coat route, I did have the block, oil pan and valve covers painted black and grey with high temp engine paint. Nothing too fancy, but figured I'd give it a "I"m new" look. I do like your idea of SB and coating parts!

Once the mechanical work is done and I'm happy with it (hell, I REALLY hope I am), I plan on sound proofing and new interior....and if I'm still happy, then a new coat of paint.

Bushings - hells yes. Those need to be done!
Brakes are good, running Powerstop Friction and Vented Rotors; I went braided steel brake lines awhile back.

Thanks Bri. I really struggled with the question of headers. I read alot of posts, including yours (which is great), but in the end decided not to. This will be a simple daily driver. Somewhere I saw a post about these trucks not being sports cars, so why try to make them something they're not. Nothing against the HP chasers out there - lord knows I'd love a SC rig..maybe someday!

I'm in Socal, IE territory.

Thank you for your input....don't laugh at me too hard if I forgot all I wrote and mount headers anyway, I'm fickle like that. :loco::loco:

I knew this question would come up and I plan to list all my expenses at the end of the project. As for now the only thing I've actually paid for were the OE Injectors, $865 for all 6 from the local Dealer. The Machine Shop and the Mechanic are scribbling in their ledger and will let me know when it's time to settle.

Please don't think I don't care about the expense, I trust both shops I'm using, but ultimately I want it done right.
