Engine Replacement V6 compatibility help

2004 sr5 v6 with 160k on it. Headgasket failed, tried a headgasket sealer and it lasted for a couple weeks.

I want to replace the engine with a newer engine but I heard there were some 1gr-fe engines that had a different cam position sensor wire plug...

I am trying to see if anyone knows which year engines from what models will work.

I tried to find a thread where someone said they had replaced their engine with a newer one from a tacoma but no luck finding that user or thread

Any help would be much appreciated, and might make my life less stressful as I just purchased this 4runner.

Why not just fix the head gasket, get the heads checked out, replace the water pump and be good to go for another 200k or so? It would be cheaper, easier, and may even last longer than a different engine with an unknown history.

Flush that HG fix crap out. All it does it plug radiators and heater core. Then fix the headgasket and be on your way. The V6 is not bad, and I personally would much rather fix the HG than I would pull that motor.

Seems like newer engines with 70k on them go for around $2500

My trusted local shop quoted me $3000 to replace the head gasket.

I can’t do a head gasket job but I can do a motor swap.

I definitely would pick a head gasket over a reman engine. But another factory engine seems like a solid option.

Shop around for HG replacement costs, and then go back to your trusted mechanic for a reality check. Hopefully, you can get a better deal from your mechanic. If not, you may have found a new pool of shops to visit.

You forgot to mention that stuff clogs up the coolant passages in the engine block and heads also depending on the engine design.

Call around to your salvage yards and/or companies like LKQ. A lot of them seem to have an internal list of engines that swap between models. We've done a few 1GR-FE replacements and our used engine supplier has a database so they know what year/models are compatible with each other.
