Engine swap journey begins!

That did the trick. Just needed to reset the computer. It idles at a perfect 750 rpm now, smooth as butter.

What an insane project. Easily the biggest repair I've ever done. I'd say it's at least twice the work of pulling the tranny.

Thanks everyone, you guys are the best!

I couldn't have done it without the help and knowledge that this forum provides.

Now you can play with cleaning the IAC and not worry about breaking it. Sensor safe throttle body cleaner it.

There is at least 1 thread here about testing it electrically on a bench.

im planning on pulling the heads off the bad motor. If the heads aren't cracked, I may rebuild that motor for the hell of it (assuming everything else looks good).

I'll have to find the test procedure for the IAC.

I have the engine I pulled out of the red 97 SR5 I too plan on pulling the heads and if all looks well I'll freshen it up. It came with a supposed blown head gasket. However when I looked at the timing belt. I don't know....the belt was ****ed. Stress cracks everywhere.

While I was putting tools away, I decided to pull the valve cover from the bad engine.

Looks like the previous owners didn't change the oil very often. Lots of varnish and some sludge.

I also drained the oil and it looked weird, almost brown like. I just changed the oil on that engine maybe 300 miles ago.

Based on these observations, I'll probably just salvage anything worth saving a toss the motor.

It's been 500 miles since I swapped in this 99 motor. I took it on a 2 hour drive up to my buddies place where I hunt and take it off road. We got 20+ inches of snow the week before I came up and got to play in some snow/mud/water and she did great as I expected. In fact, I got to do my first "water crossing" through a natural pit that collects water in early spring.

I would say the water was 2.5 feet deep. She chugged on through it didn't miss a beat so that was cool.

The engine is running excellent. No funny noises, no leaks (coolant/oil level has not drop one bit) runs smooth as butter and zero issues.

Here's to another 200k miles!

Good to hear Mike. I am glad the leak down tester worked to take any further guesswork out of what the problem may have been. I know others on here and YT who have used the block tester from NAPA and the like, had a head gasket issue, but gotten false negatives (it didn't change color for them). I have never used one on a Toyota but they have worked on Chevys and Fords for me.

IMO, those dye testers probably work once the HG leak is pretty bad where you should already be pretty certain its a HG leak.

I'm not going to throw it away since its a super quick/easy test but you are right, the leak down test is king.

Thanks again fellas for all the help/wisdom.
