Engine Swap?

I have an 87 4runner that i think is in need of a new engine. Its old and tired and just dont seem to have the power i need. Its an old 22re with about 350k miles on it and once i added all the mods its just not cutting it anymore for some things.

On normal city driving its usually just fine, but once I hit highway speeds of anything over 50mph it just cant seem to make it up the very slight hills we have here in Kansas.

It was fine until I added the lift and bigger tires, but just dont cut it now. I installed a Blazeland long travel kit and then a All Pro off road lift kit in the rear with longer leaf springs and some 33" tires. Thats when things started to get a little slumpy lol.

I want to know your opinions on what I should do for an engine now? I think I have it narrowed down to a couple options but i would like to get some input from anyone here that has done this.

and they have a Stage 2 engine that looks to fit the bill. I am not a great mechanic so its appealing because I can simply pull and put without changing much of anything. Has anyone had any experience with them or using this engine? I would like to see how well they perform compared to a stock engine. They have very few videos out on them.

My other option was to just toss in an LS based motor like maybe a 5.3 or something, but I would rather not have to do that since i suck at fabricating plus id like to keep it a Toyoda based project.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

You need to re-gear, that is your problem. It is robbing your power running stock gears with oversize tires.
I'd get a set of 4.88s and decide if you really want more power with an engine swap down the line.

Sorry i should have said that in my first post. I currently am running 4.88 gears in it.

When i first got the truck it only had a 3" body lift on some 33" swampers. I didnt care for the body lift since it didnt really help with the suspension so I added the Blazeland kilt and the All Pro rear kit. Both of those together gave me another 3 inches of suspension lift along with the 3" body lift. Add the 33" tires onto it and thats where im taxing the motor.

I will be getting rid of the 3" body lift and bringing it down to a more modest 1.5" body lift. Id take it totally out but then im pretty sure that I would need to cut my fenders out a bit to clear my tires when i get into the rocks and i would rather not have to do that lol.

From what ive read 22re performance makes a nice motor. But i think you may not be satisfied even still. For the price (over 2k i believe) you can get a decent wrecked truck with a 3.4 and swap it in. I can't remember the name, but there are a few companies that sell adapters for the motor mounts,tranny, etc. Making it basically a bolt in type of deal. With all mentioned you may still be at or under the price of the nice 22re. That's what i would do if i was really wanting more power for the price you plan to spend. GL

If you want to keep it 4cyl, I'd go for a 3rz, if not 5vz it!

20hp for 3,000$ from 22re performance is a waste
You can get a diesel Mercedes running for that and swap that over.
Or a sweet 4.3l Chevy with mods if your spending that much.

I have had many 22re engines some are dogs and some are peppy I haven't figured out why yet. But don't waste money on 22re performance its a rip off

Just rebuild or swap to a better power plant!
