ok so we just changed my head gasket, and then the guy told me my camshaft on the right side was bad after we put the engine back, and now its ticking really bad and i cant figure out why. He said my cam was burned black, so would that do it?

It sounds like you have one or more flat lobes on the cam. Camshafts have bumps (or lobes) which when rotating alternately press and release valve lifters to open and close the valves in the head at the precise time that air/fuel or exhaust functions are needed by the engine. The ticking you hear is due to excessive clearance (due to wear) between the cam lobe and the valve lifter. I hope this helps.

so then i should replace my cam and lifters on that side? the other side has a new cam already. Because when i drive the truck like 10 miles and park, theres smoke coming from the engine not all the time but most of the time its like somethings hitting the engine and burning off like oil or water

Unfortunately It seems your only choice. It sounds like you may have an oil leak at the valve cover which may be causing the smoke when it hits the hot exhaust manifold. Did you ever run this engine out of oil? How many miles on it. Running low on oil is a great way to ruin camshafts as well as other parts.

I am curious, did the engine tick before you pulled your heads off?
I have a couple ideas to suggest. One is simple valve clearance, the buckets that are under your cams are all different thickness to allow for valve clearance and if you take them out and reinstall in a different order your clearance is off. This condition is usually accompanied by rough idle. Second possibility.. are the "buckets" hanging up? This usually makes an "omg my engine is comming apart" type of clicking noise in the top end. A flat cam or bad lobe is virtually unheard of in this model V6, NOT IMPOSIBLE, just that I have not seen one ever and have had literally hundreds of these heads off. To sum up if the ticking was not there before you had the heads pulled you most likely have to have the clearance checked and adjusted.

yes i ran the engine with out oil, i guess, it blew the dipstick out, no water in the rad, the guy said they didnt take nothing off the heads but the camshaft when he went and had it shaved, but no it didnt tick before

Bummer! It sounds like they may have not put the lifters back in the original locations after they did the headwork as yotatech said. Is it multiple tics or just one really loud one. I think you need a really good mechanic to look at this cause if it isn't done right you just add problems to the existing ones.

the guy who i bought it from is a state inspector, he did all the work to the engine and truck, he said it was coming from both sides of the engine, and he pulled the spark plug #6 off and the engine didnt rev down or anything like it did when he pulled the the other ones off so he said that it wasnt like doing somehting or something lol i know that really helps right i cant remember what he said.

It sounds like #6 is dead. Make him fix it or get your money back.

he wont fix it and wont give me my money back, he said because he did it as a favor seeing how the other guy was suppose to do it and he ended up going to jail lol.i paid him 250 to do the job, but now it rattles and when i drive lke from here to school 10 miles, my truck is smoking, oils coming out from somewhere and hitting my engine. He told me if i replaced my camshaft and lifters the ticking would go away.

As a factory tech I am sorry to hear of this hack not standing behind his repair, ticks me off actually and i didnt pay for it. Anyway sounds like you have to start from scratch with a different shop. A headgasket job on the 3.0 payed just over 10 hours labor under warranty and took most of one day to do correctly when toyota recalled them. The job should run about a grand , to do the right way. I advise you not to drive it too much until someone reputable can look at it and tell you what is going on. The 3.0 was a quirky motor to work on at best, try an all foreign shop or ...egads a factory tech.
