It sounds like you have one or more flat lobes on the cam. Camshafts have bumps (or lobes) which when rotating alternately press and release valve lifters to open and close the valves in the head at the precise time that air/fuel or exhaust functions are needed by the engine. The ticking you hear is due to excessive clearance (due to wear) between the cam lobe and the valve lifter. I hope this helps.TwoX said:ok so we just changed my head gasket, and then the guy told me my camshaft on the right side was bad after we put the engine back, and now its ticking really bad and i cant figure out why. He said my cam was burned black, so would that do it?
Unfortunately It seems your only choice. It sounds like you may have an oil leak at the valve cover which may be causing the smoke when it hits the hot exhaust manifold. Did you ever run this engine out of oil? How many miles on it. Running low on oil is a great way to ruin camshafts as well as other parts.TwoX said:so then i should replace my cam and lifters on that side? the other side has a new cam already. Because when i drive the truck like 10 miles and park, theres smoke coming from the engine not all the time but most of the time its like somethings hitting the engine and burning off like oil or water
Bummer! It sounds like they may have not put the lifters back in the original locations after they did the headwork as yotatech said. Is it multiple tics or just one really loud one. I think you need a really good mechanic to look at this cause if it isn't done right you just add problems to the existing ones.TwoX said:yes i ran the engine with out oil, i guess, it blew the dipstick out, no water in the rad, the guy said they didnt take nothing off the heads but the camshaft when he went and had it shaved, but no it didnt tick before
It sounds like #6 is dead. Make him fix it or get your money back.TwoX said:the guy who i bought it from is a state inspector, he did all the work to the engine and truck, he said it was coming from both sides of the engine, and he pulled the spark plug #6 off and the engine didnt rev down or anything like it did when he pulled the the other ones off so he said that it wasnt like doing somehting or something lol i know that really helps right i cant remember what he said.
