engine whine and shift hesitation

hey all

noticed a whine while driving in my truck earlier. Took it out for about 15 mins and checked it when I got to my destination. there is a high pitched whine tied to engine RPM

did some shopping, came back out, and started it up. the noise was gone but came back about 5 minutes later. A few minutes after that I noticed it was hesitating between shifts. At one point i popped it in neutral and then I couldn't get it back in gear until I stopped and put it in park.

Took two videos. neither of them are great but the RPM one shows it acting rather weird. The video of the engine is hard to tell but suffice it to say the majority of what you hear is the whine, not the engine.

any help is appreciated.....will check coolant/tranny colors after it cools down a bit

also heard a clacking from the tranny in park :-(

Bump - limped to the dealer. Noise was bad on startup and subsided. 3 &4th gear seemed OK. kept it out of OD to try and keep the temp down.

Don't hear any engine/tranny noise

I hear sounds, not noise. So what other symptoms are there that are repeatable? Did you have the radio on when you heard the whine? Are you sure it wasn't the charging system cranking the amps to feed the batt to feed the radio or other electrical loads?

If your tranny fluid is not nice and translucent red, change it. I drained mine a couple weeks ago after 50K, looked like new. Luck!

it's definately a high pitched whine. It was even worse this morning. you can hear it coming from the transmission area. accelerating is a chore as it revs about 1k revs higher than normal and really wont shift into 2nd

Well in that case, if that were my rig, I would take it to a place I trust to power flush the tranny fluid, it'll be like $100 but well worth it. They'll pump clean fluid in/dirty out and keep doing that until it runs out clear and clean.

Doing that has fixed many a folks tranny issues and stopped the problems dead in their tracks. I wouldn't mess around with a potential $4500 rebuild item.

What does the trans fluid look like? Level good? This isn't a 4x4 w/an unbypassed factory tranny cooler is it?

Lots of luck! :^)

Yes it is unbypassed. The shop is saying it milkshake'd however when I look at the fluid it is not foamy at all

quoted me $4750 for new trans and radiator
