Entry keypad

I know there are a few installers on here and other people interested in electronics so i wanted to see about the avaliability and usefullness of a keypad. I have a keypad on my explorer where i can unlock and lock the doors without the key and havent had a single issue with it so far.

Are there any good aftermarket keypads avaliable that i could have put on my 4 runner at some point? Are there any security issues with these?

I currently carry two sets of keys with me all the time. I keep a spare in one pocket then my real set with all the other keys for normal use. Needless to say i dont want to lock the keys in the car. With my explorer i would just type in the code and im good to go.


So any thoughts on this and do any of you have one you could post a picture?

I don't think he was referring to remote start... just a keypad that you can mount on the vehicle that you can enter a code into to unlock the doors.

Personally I wouldn't bother... 1 because it would be permanent and 2 because you'd have to pay a lot of money to have it installed unless of course you are handy enough to DIY.

There are ways around it... You can get keyless entry systems with a GPS module that can unlock your doors in the event that you locked your keys in your car....kind of like onstar. Audiovox is the only company that I know of that offers it free of charge and all you have to do is buy the module to plug into your Audiovox alarm. I believe the module is around $200. Viper offers it as well but they charge $100 per vehicle per year and you can only use it so many times.

I'm not a huge audiovox alarm fan, but for what it offers it does get the job done. I believe the model number is CL100. Basically if you lock your keys in your car you call a number and enter a code and it unlocks your doors.
 
Man that's like so 80's. That was like the precursor to the keyless key fobs. I don't even understand why Ford still even does this, but again it would be very expensive and the permant nature of the install would probably kill the resale value.
 
There are plenty of other mods you could add with that money, that will actually help it's appearance. Seems like a waste of money to me.
 
I agree with you that there are better looking additions but this is a convienance issue not looks or performance. I could think of allot of other things i would like to add but i just like being able to get into the car without the keys. I would also prefer not to have to call some service. Say if im working on it or just want to stop by and get something out i can even if i dont have the keys handy. I do it allot with my explorer.

The thing is i agree with the resale issue so i would need to figure out some other mount. Are there any easily replaceable parts yall can think of where i could mount it if i decide to do this? Im also a little unsure about the security of it. As for manufacturers it looks like Essex is the brand that keeps coming up and they sell a vertical and horizontal faceplate.

I think this is one of those features that people would use more than they realize. When I go skiing, hiking, biking to the beach, etc... I am constantly mindful of where my keys are hoping that they did not fall out of my pack or jacket pocket. It would be nice to leave them in the glovebox and unlock the door with a keypad.

With proper installation, I do not feel it will effect resale at all. Mileage and vehicle condition are much greater factors.

I think this too would be useful, just going to the beach I am more concerned about getting my key fob wet or someone stealing it while I am away from my stuff, but with the number entry on the door you could leave the keys inside hidden and not have to carry the keys with you. I have not seen an aftermarket setup but I amsure there is someone out there willing to do it for the right money.

I know exactly how you feel. I just got my 2007 4Runner after having an Explorer for 6 years. I depended on the keypad so much everyday it's killing me not having it now. I keep a key in my wallet for when I lock myself out.

A friend of mine just purchased a Ford Expedition without a factory keypad. Being a previous Explorer owner, he wanted the keypad, and was able to buy a keypad from the dealer for $75 and program and install it himself. It operates just like a key fob (wireless). You can lock the vehicle, unlock it, or pop the back window open with it. The best part is, it STICKS on the truck door. No drilling or cutting to install.

There has to be some company that sells stick on keypads for Toyota vehicles. I would love to get one.
