Entune and text messages

It could be your phone. To diagnose, pair someone else's phone and see if you have the same problem. I was having an issue and thought it was the unit, it was actually something on my phone that was messing with it.

Solution: if it is your phone, and you may resist this notion at first. Reset it to factory default, basically a fresh start. Yes, it will delete everything. So, back up what yu want to save, photos etc. Then, it should work fine.

This is a great thing to do anyway for the health of your phone as over time you really junk it up w/ apps and other stuff. I gained about 3X battery life after reset and got rid of all the crap. I too, at first loathed the idea of starting it fresh. But, if you've had your phone for any length of time you will be pumped at its new found competence.

I haven't tested rigorously, but I'm pretty sure I'm seeing the same as Hipshot69. When I first got the truck, I forgot/paired my device to get the text read function working but then it would stop. It hadn't worked for weeks and then while I was driving yesterday, out of the blue it was able to read a text message. A couple of hours later it could not.

2016 TEP and iOS 9.2.1 (behaved the same with 9.2 also).

How do you know if you have the latest Entune?

I think resetting my phone will be my last option. I have the iphone 6 so it is only a year and a half old. That sounds like a pain in the ass. I will call Toyota first and see if there is a head unit update. They seem kinda useless over there though so I hope they even know what I am talking about. Because I live in Canada, I don't actually have Entune. Therefore I cannot update Entune online. The site wants a US address to update. That is a whole other discussion for another thread I am sure.

Thanks TRDZEB

Hipshot69 did you try pairing someone else's phone to determine if it's your phone or the head unit? That will give you the info you need to make that determination.

If it's not the phone, then your head unit needs the update which your local dealer can do for you.

I have an appointment with a service tech this afternoon. I will be there with him so we will be testing it together. I am sure he will have an extra phone we can use to test. I hope it is as simple as an update.

The tech thought he fixed it and then I drove away and it stopped working again. Last night I reset my phone and restored everything. I have reset networks and done everything I can think of and it still doesn't work. I have a full blown apointment on Friday where they will check the head unit and update or replace if needed. If all else fails, at least I will get a free wash job out of it.

I don't know if this will make a difference for you in this situation but in the iPhone Bluetooth settings under the Toyota 4Runner do you have both show notifications and sync contacts turned on? I do for mine and I don't seem to have a problem. I also have phone favorites and phone recent groups checked as well as all contacts.

Good Luck! I'm having the same problem myself. keep us posted, please!

Just got my truck back. After a team of experts worked on it all morning, trying different phones and scenarios, they claim it is working flawlessly. I jumped in and it's asking me to set up messaging once again. I did notice it works just fine when I toggle Bluetooth off and on again. If I do this every time, I guess it's just something I have to get used to.
I am going to an Apple Store tonight and see if it's something they can help me with.
At least my truck is clean now. Well, sort of. They did kind of a piss poor job at that.

It's now official a dead end. Apple ran a diagnostics test on my iPhone 6 and everything checked out perfectly. The dude said that my head unit on my new 4R probably needs updating. Well, Toyota said it didn't. Plus their iPhones seemed to work okay with it when they did their tests.
So, after starting my vehicle, I will need to turn off and on my Bluetooth from now on if I want the text messages to read out loud to me. No biggie, I guess

Mine works great with my droid turbo, always connected, always reads the text, even profanities I didn't think it would...

I found it weird it wouldn't reply to a text with voice to text though. I have set up quite a few quick replies but it's annoying to scroll through them all and a lot of time it's not exactly what I need to say.

So to get around this, I'll just long press #2 quick message and (when stopped, safety first) you can type a quick reply and send.

I dunno I feel like it's slightly faster then digging in my pocket, unlocking my phone, pulling up texts, and replying with the phone... But who knows, just another option.

Don't understand why voice to text isn't an option, I've had it on phones since early 2000's.. Or am I missing something and this is possible?
