entune/iPhone not working

When I plug in my iPhone via the USB plug, the screen tells me the power consumption is too high and it shuts off. My phone still charges but the ipod feature in my audio sources does not show up.....any thoughts?

My iPhone 4S works fine, but a friend's MP3 player gave the same error when plugged into my truck. I can't remember what brand it was.
