Same code I gots recently on the '01. No on aftermarket gas cap. Try this first- New gas cap from Toyota ($26). If that don't work (make sure reset comp or clear code with scanner), remove charcoal canister and test the VCV. It should make an audible "click" if you attach leads to it. That was my faulty part. Got a Dorman replacement from Advance Auto for $40. Fixed. Much rather go OEM for such things, but not too many options on Thanksgiving eve at 8:00 PM

yeah just in case go ahead and spend 40 bucks on Felpro valve cover gaskets and replace them.. that will help you get to know the top side of that engine and while you're at it seal the cam caps on the back side of the engine(very easy to do while you have the valve covers off)if the cam caps are leaking it'll drain down the back side of the engine and make a big mess.

Yeah a little disappointing. Borrowed a friends scanner and got a P0440 returned. Hoping I just didn't tighten the gas cap enough or something. A lot of people mentioned that you can get this problem with an aftermarket gas cap, so I'm now trying to determine if thats my problem. Not super worried as most people with serious problems smelled gas which isn't my case. Either way I unplugged the battery for 45 min which made the CEL light go out. Hopefully I don't see it again!

It will come back if it's the kind of CEL that needs several engine cycles to actually activate the light unlike say a bad coil which instantly reactivates the light. Take it to an Autozone or similar and notate the stored codes and research the codes.
