So, I've been a long time lurker with my previous 04 SR5 but I sold that and now I have a 99 SR5 3.4L. I bought her a couple of months ago for a great deal but ever since I have been fighting the dreaded gas mileage issue. I am currently getting about 14 MPG average on the hwy. Thats horrible. I did notice recently though that the factory wheels and tires on this rig was supposed to be 225/75/15's and since then the recent owner put 265/70/16's on it. I understand that will throw off the MPG calculation too but I don't know exactly how to calculate the difference.
Anyway, I changed out the intake and exhaust this weekend and thought you guys would like to see what I found.
I put a Volant CAI in it after reading some good things about them but let me tell you, this thing better give me some incredible gas mileage and power increase. In my opinion the overall fitment and engineering of it is garbage. The bolt holes barely lined up, they didn't send new hardware with it, and the vacuum lines provided barely reached in some spots and were WAY too long in others. I would expect it to be like this for an ebay intake, but not a premium performance intake. I'm tempted to send it back and get an Injen. Thats just my .02 though.
Onto the exhaust though, I replaced both the front and rear catalytic converters as well as the upstream o2 sensor with the factory Denso. Check out what I found in the front Cat. This cat was so deteriorated I feel pretty good that I found the culprit to my horrible gas mileage. Its hard to believe any exhaust got through there at all.
