Exhaust pipe broke off? Help

Hey Guys,

After noticing a lower sounding engine exhaust noise, I looked under my 2002 4 runner and saw this.....


Does this need fixed ASAP or a major issue?

Any tips on how I can do this myself to save $$? Any advice would be appreciated from anyone.

It's not going to hurt anything to drive it like that, but judging by the pics it looks like you're going to need a new muffler and tailpipe.

This literally just happened to me on the way back from CT lol... Mine broke at the flange of the tailpipe and spared the muffler.

Yep, I had the same happen this past summer after a bunch of rough back road driving. $80 later I had a new walker rear section installed, no big deal.

OP sad to say but you're probably looking at a new muffler. I installed a walker stainless steel unit that I bought off rockauto for about $150 or so as I recall. A bit louder than stock unfortunately and I had issues with getting it to seal with the walker gaskets. OEM Toyota gaskets are the way to go, but even then I never got an ideal seal. Maybe if you found a clean truck in the junkyard with an intact muffler that'd be an option, but chances are it'd be as bad as yours that just failed.

Any decent exhaust shop can fix this. No need to pay dealer prices for something like this. They'll just cut the old muffler off, throw a new muffler and tailpipe on it, and you're on your way for the next 100k miles. Exhaust work is one of those things where it absolutely makes sense to take it to a pro.

I'd caution that if you just want them to slap on something cheap, aluminized steel components will absolutely not last 100k in a climate where road salt is used. And mark-ups at muffler shops are not insignificant. I would have paid much more than $150 for the stainless Walker muffler I bought online and installed myself.

I had a local shop put a new high-flow muffler and new larger piping on for $225. Shop around, you'll find someone who will do it for a good price.

That's what the OEM part is, and they last plenty long enough. Stainless exhaust is overkill in this application IMO.

Interesting, I had assumed it was stainless. I thought that at some point in the mid 90s most manufacturers switched over to stainless steel exhaust.

So driving an SUV with exhaust going into the vehicle making you and your family sick or worse even death? Never good to drive vehicle with exhaust coming into cab from under.

Don't you know? Toyota designed 4Runner's exhaust system to only release smells of freshly baked cookies and evergreen trees. It's awesome.

It's broken off in right in front of the rear axle, just a couple of feet from where it would normally exit. I wouldn't leave it like that forever, but it's damn sure not going to kill his family to drive it like that until he can get it fixed. Have you never seen a car with "turndowns" on it? They're everywhere, and the drivers certainly aren't killing over at the wheel.

No but I was in a bronco that I owned the exact same way. At lights it would fill the cab, you would get sick and headache just sitting at light. Thats why I said it. There is a reason there is an extra few feet after the muffler.

You'll need to look up your specific engine and year but they are running rebates currently on Walker mufflers. I can't speak to quality or longevity, but it doesn't get any cheaper. I think some others put one on though, I remember themn mentioned. You could try a search for reviews.

I put two of walkers stainless steel muffler assemblies on my Saturn in three years. The first one rusted out. I find out the guts were the only part that was stainless. But Walker had a 50 dollar rebate do I put the second one on the Saturn SL1 and after rebate it was a 14 dollar muffler.
Longevity wise I don't know about the second one. Some kid turned left in front of me and totaled it.

There you go. This is all you need, and it's an easy job.

That's assuming the rest of the exhaust system is in good enough shape to actually connect it to. Based on the pictures, I suspect the fasteners are too corroded to remove, and even if he were to succeed in loosening the fasteners, the rest of the exhaust system tubing might be ready to fail, too.

Without inspecting it, it's just a guess as to how much of the exhaust system needs to be replaced.

The correct part # for the Walker muffler is 54681, the one wake_rider mentioned is for 1996-2000. You will also need two 31384 gaskets,just get the nuts and bolts from Home Depot,etc.

Pep Boys: order online for store pickup and enter promotion code "secret35" for a 35% discount. $122.19 muffler $6.48 gaskets = $128.67 + sales tax. The store probably won't stock the muffler,takes a day or so.

I don't have part #s for the nuts and bolts because I used hardware I had lying around when I replaced my stock catalytic converts with Walkers this past weekend. The Walker exhaust flanges have larger bolt holes than factory Toyota;ended up using nuts with a wide washer at the base to connect the stock muffler to the aftermarket cat.

Also get yourself a sawzall and new blades to cut off the old rusted hardware. I went through at least one blade cutting off the old hardware at the cat-to-muffler flange.
