Exhaust question

Hello. I recently purchased a 1993 4runner with the 3.0 v6 from my buddies father. It's bone stock besides having some nice rims on it. I have been looking at different exhaust setups but don't have the money to pay a shop to put it on for me. If I were to cut the exhaust off myself and put a new setup on will it cause my check engine light to come on? My last truck didn't but I wasn't sure about the 4runner. And if anyone has any recommendations on what they think sounds good please let me know. I'm looking for something that sounds good at idle and low rpm's but sounds mean when I get on the gas.

You must be 17 or so? F*ck how the truck sounds, focus on how the truck runs and let the sound take care of itself . You'll get a much bigger performance boost from a set of exhaust headers than you will from some fancy aftermarket muffler.

You won't get a check engine light from modifying your exhaust yourself as long as you leave the O2 sensors intact. You have one before and after the catalytic converter, and their purpose, among other things, is to read the amount of unburned oxygen in your exhaust and report that to the computer so it can make changes to fuel and timing to compensate. Take away the O2 sensors and the truck will drive much less efficiently.

Headers are your best performance upgrade but they are really expensive. I personally would just un-bolt the exhaust flange after the cat to see how you like it. But really if you want anything permanent your gonna need to weld.

My set up went through stages and I am happy with where it is now but my first stage was a custom made cat-back exhaust with a flowmaster super 44 muffler and 2.25'' piping out a 4'' tip. It made it a little louder but I personally didn't like it.
