Some options collected from forum posts and online sources as of 2/12/13 for 4Runner 5th Gen Exhaust mods:

if one wanted to replace the stock muffler of with say a MagnaFlow 12586 does this new muffler bolt on, or do you have to cut stuff off? And Toyota doesn't make an exhaust system for the 5th gen., correct?

it's cut-off, weld-on; not bolt-on. no TRD exhaust for the 5th Gen as of yet.

if you're going to replace your muffler, have the shop reroute the exit to behind the right rear tire. it will eliminate most of the fumes coming in the cabin when driving with the rear window down.

Borla makes a cat-back system but it's not cheap.

I chose that specific magnaflow as an example because there are some videos of it on the site and it seems to be popular - obviously because the sound fits well and the price is very good. Is there a thread that compares the different options for exhaust modifications for 5th gens as of right now in terms of sound/price? Or just information on the other two options that have been mentioned here?

My truck was used by Magnaflow to develop their exhaust system for the 5th Gen 4Runner. I can attest that there is no HWY drone at all.

You mean specifically the Magnaflow 12586?--or did you mean that magnaflow makes the stock 5th gen system?

Topdeck is referring to the 5th gen T4R cat-back system from Magnaflow (PART# 15584). I have it on my 2010 4Runner and, as Topdeck attests, no highway drone. This cat-back exhaust has a nice mellow tone but I bought it for the side-exit tip location (goes well with a higher clearance custom rear bumper) and the better-than-OEM muffler clearance.

How do the two last Magnaflow options differ from one another? I can't tell any diff. from the website.

I had a small I think 14" muffler that was welded on, not sure of the part number. If you look at my build towards the end you can see how small it is compared to the Borla, which is about the same size as stock. I am WAY happier with the Borla.

Magnaflow categorizes their mufflers by the measurement by:

core size
body length
inlet/outlet size
body shape

I'm guessing w/ inlet/outlet size you just pick what fits your vehicle. But how do the other measurements affect the way the muffler sounds?
