Exhaust

I have seen this in people's build threads, and I have seen a thread or two on the exhausts. I just want to know what are people running on their 5th gens, cat back kit(magnaflow and borla were the only two I could find) or are people building their own exhaust? What sounds good and what sounds like a swarm of bumble bees?

My exhaust was damaged and I should be getting some money soon to replace it, so why not just upgrade it since it has to be replaced?

I went with just a magnaflow muffler and I really dig it. Its not too loud but gives it a nice throaty sound.

There are definitely people running a full kit from Borla etc, and also some running the URD Y Pipe as well.

I know most of the catbacks require a new airbox as well, right?

I really don't want to mess with my airbox because snorkel, but I'd be interested to know how a magnaflow sounds.

I don't understand why the intake would be "required" for an exhaust system. It would be recommended to do, but its not necessary to have.

I doubt you'd see much gain in hp/torque with just a cat back anyways, probably under 5hp, if that, and an intake will not really bump that up much either. Without real-world numbers though, its anyone's guess, but the bottom line is its not a requirement, nothing will blow up or break if you don't do an intake along with the exhaust.

It wouldn't really, the only difference you will hear is that with the stock intake it will sound like its breathing through a straw.

However I am only looking at the aftermarket because 1. sound, 2. I need a new muffler, so I might as well do something different.

I'm running a Flowmaster 70 series muffler (straight swap with stock muffler).

Great bass sound outside, baritone sound inside.
Completely silent at idle.
Reasonably grumbly between 5 and 45 MPH.
Sound tapers off and goes virtually completely silent at 50 MPH to 70 MPH. Have not tested past that.
I actually wish I'd gone with a Super 50 SUV muffler now, but I'll keep the 70 series for at least a while (probably forever out of laziness to want to swap again).

with a truck you can not tune there is no need for aftermarket intake with exhaust. its not like we can make more power with aftermarket exhausts on our toyotas anyway

Figured I'd ask. I'm on the fence about a new exhaust, I guess I don't want to sound like I'm at a drag strip when I'm out in the middle of nowhere camping.

Also super 70ii with the urd y-pipe , but it does help to do some xtra insulation in your doors , really helped mine ! Antman stuff !! Just did 1400 mi trip avg speed 80mph purred like a .........the larger ie longer canister keeps it from being to ricey , also have same on son's 05

Is it the super 70 II cat back kit? Or is it just the muffler?

I'm running a magnaflow. The throaty growl is similar to that of the trd catbacks put on older FJs. I notice a bit more low end torque. But that's just my observation.

I have a super 70 just sitting. You want it pm me...

To answer jstim question
The exhaust system on our rigs are already 2.5" mandrel bend. For me it wasn't economically sound to replace a 2.5" system with a 2.5" system for $500+. The only restriction in the system is the muffler itself. I spent less than half replacing the muffler with a Magnaflow and then having them do a hi tuck...

The only way I would look into buy a whole exhaust system is if I was going to a full 3" exhaust. And I was told that the AFE power Mach force xp hi tuck has a hi probability of fitting...
