experience with my new 4R

I have owned new 4R for two weeks and 400 miles. Not got at bargain and paid 33855 for a MSRP of 34155. SR5 + convenience package + bluetooth + ...

A few comments: (1) Very smooth ride. Sport seats are pretty comfortable.
(2) Dashboard is so cool. Cooler than most of other midsize SUVs. (3) Interior
is spacial. (4) got said MPG. My combine MPG is around 21.

and (a) Engine is not as quite as I hoped. I know that Toyota is good at
making quite engines but this 4Runner is not that quite. (2) Seems lacking sufficient power when climbing. I was driving from Denver to Loveland Ski area along I70 and found that I was passed by most of the others. Larger engine noise was heard when applying deeper accelerator pedal.

A question: When to put shift lever in S? I know we use D for normal driving but do not know when to use S. When climbing slopes in I70 I did find that S mode at level 4 gave me more power than D mode.

S doesnt do anything than keep it in gear longer to increase "responsiveness" when its only remaining in gear and doing nothing special..what do you mean level 4? 4 instead of D on the shifter?

Low end torque (15-2.5k) is a concern for many V6 owners.

QUIET not quite

Putting the transmission on sport shift will allow you to put it in whatever gear you want. If you want to keep it in 4th up a long, steep climb instead of punching the throttle to get it to downshift, pop it into 4th and move the shifter backward until the readout says 4.

Actually, popping it into 'S' already moves it into 4th. I did this a few times going up hills with my rig fully loaded.

I noticed, during my test drive, that it went directly to 4th when going to S mode. I was driving around town, though. I figured that it would go to 5 if at speeds of 50mph or more. Good to know, though.

First of all, you only have 400 miles on yours, so your are still in the break in period. Therefore, you shouldn't be trying to be the fastest vehicle going up a hill. Take it easy for the first 1,000 miles.

Second, you should never be getting passed by other vehicles if you don't want to. What do I mean by this? Well, I live in Pittsburgh and we have hills everywhere. The new 4R can pass everyone on the hill, but it's all based on how you drive it. For example, I drove through the mountains on the PA Turnpike a few weeks ago going up a steep incline with many bends. I had more power than anyone around me and passed vehicles with absolutely no problem at all.

You will get whatever you need out of the engine, but it's all based on your driving technique. If you feel you are not getting the power you need, shift to S and go down to 4th gear - 5th gear is basically an overdrive gear anyway, so if you need more power going up a hill, take it out of 5th.

I'd love to take you for a ride in mine so I can show you how it's done!

BTW, nice choice of vehicle (see below):

What was this thread about again?
