Ext. Tranny cooler hose connection confusion.

After trolling thru numerous posts on this conversion, I am still not 100% certain about where the hoses connect to. It's an easy enough job that I am able to do, so as far as I understand, is it a case of the following ?

Remove the rubber hoses from the metal in/out ATF lines going to the rad and then connect new hoses to the new cooler ? So basically one ATF hose connects to the (in) cooler and the other (out) end connects to the other ATF hose ? job done ?

What about the two open ends on the rad where the transmission hoses were connected, do I just connect them both together with a length of pipe or block each one off ?

Some posts are not showing what was done others say remove the ATF send hose and connect to the cooler and than say connect the other end from the cooler to the rad ! I thought the rad was being bypassed ? I am so confused ?

Is there any hose left connected to the rad at all ?
Can someone pls give some basic simple hose connection instruction ?

I have no problems about where to connect a cooler or routing the hoses.

Thanks so much.

Bro, you're over thinking the hell out of this. Disconnect the hoses going to the radiator and plug them into the cooler. Done. That's literally all you need to do.

People usually block off the radiator nipples, or take a piece of hose and connect them together (same effect as just blocking them off) so shit can't get into the cooler that's integral to the radiator and also in the event that the radiator fails somehow, it won't leak out from those ports.

It depends if you're wanting to bypass the radiator completely which is what I did to avoid pink milk shake. 2 hoses attach from trans cooler to transmission (send line hose & return line hose).

Since I bypassed my radiator, I connected the 2 open ends with a piece of transmission hose I had left over.

There's a couple options out there.

1) bypassing the radiator, which it sounds like you're doing.

If Doing this, yes. Just connect to the external cooler and leave the others off (at least that's what I did).

2) running in series with the radiator, in which case you'd run from the cooler, to the radiator back to the transmission.

Leaving the transmission disconnected from the radiator is the only true way to avoid the pink milkshake, but some people like to leave it in series, which doesn't really make sense to me, but that's just me.

So, in short, if you're just using the external cooler, leave the radiator disconnected. No need to plug anything up, seeing as there's no fluid going to it anymore.

I guess you CAN run a hose to it, in case the radiator fails, to keep the coolant in the radiator, but don't know how well that would work circulating the coolant around, etc.

Awesome ! I had it right all along. Yes, I had a feeling I was thinking the hell out of it all.
As I am at 384,000Kms I want to avoid any possibility of a pink milkshake happening and totally bypass the radiator.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions re:hose connections. I can go to bed now and sleep !

I am currently about to install mine tomorrow possibly.

I was going to install a timing belt and water pump and was thinking about taking the radiator out and maybe putting some sealant inside the trans cooler tubes, not very plausible.

Might just cap the ends off.

Is it necessary to replace the hoses too or can the original ones be used still ? naturally depends on the condition !

Which cooler did you get and where from ?
I got the B&M Cooler through eBay sold by Jegs, came with hose, hardware, and everything needed however I will probably buy some 90* fittings to use on it.

My kit came with hose, I may buy new hose depending on the quality of the supplied hose, Oreillys should have it for about $1 a foot.

I went ahead and replaced mine. Taking the hoses off the tranny ports can be a pita but just cut them off by gripping with some vice grips ,or what I did was cut the hose with some sharp salon scissors all the way up so I didn't have to yank them..you might need more transmission hose and make sure you get the right clamps before hand saves time!!
Really easy mod!
Enjoy it

Replacing the hoses would be a good idea especially since it's cheap & I prefer changing out old parts when doing maintenance. Get 3/8" ID transmission hose b/c you will get a better fit around the transmission hard lines. The B&M 70268 that I got came with 5/16" hose but I couldn't secure it around the transmission hard lines as well b/c it was slightly too small. The 3/8" hose gave me a more secure fit around the hard lines.

Exactly the same issue I had with the hose supplied with B&M's kit.
