Extended Rear Differential Breather

A few weeks ago I saw a extended differential breather for the 4runner on an unknown website, and I could have sworn I got the link from t4r. For the life of me I can't remember where I saw it... I've found the ARB breather system, but this product was significantly cheaper and looked to be of better craftsmanship.

Does anyone know where I can find this product? Trust me, I've scoured the forum up and down for this.

Yeah, I read threads on how to make one myself, but the extender kit I found was a direct-fit good quality product. I can certainly make one myself, but the quality of the mystery product I found was better than what I have seen thrown together on here. Not to knock anyones' custom job, but I'd rather just buy this kit

Honestly, that Low Range kit doesn't seem too bad at $25, but it'll be $35 after shipping and at that point I don't think it's worth the convenience. I get amazed at the "diff breather kits" out there for $80 or more, though.

Short answer - the factory breather on top of the diff isn't ideal. An extended breather is less likely to get dirty or clogged, meaning your diff is less likely to suck water past the axle seals in deep water crossings.

No, you want to route the house somewhere high and out of the way. I have the breather extension on my front diff mounted to the firewall in the engine compartment, and the breather on the rear hose tucked up behind a taillight. Make sure your hoses on the rear axle has enough slack that the axle can droop without pulling it free.

Some people put a filter or a check valve on the end, but I don't see the point. I'm not worried about dust, and I want that thing free to breathe.

I don't have a pic handy, but a google image search should give you the idea. Remove the factory breather, screw the barbed fitting into it's place, slip the hose on (a hose clamp will help keep it there), route the other end to someplace safe and use a cable clamp or zip tie or something to keep it there.

BTW - I mounted the breather valve inside the gas filler cubby - took about 15 minutes to install the whole thing.

Hey thanks again! I'm going to do a little more research, but it certainly seems a better deal than the $70 ARB kit. I just like how everything is properly fit and included in the kit. That'll keep me from screwing up.

I'll help ya do it one weekend. I did mine in about 45 minutes and most of that time was spent figuring out how to get into the cab at the jack compartment.
