Factory Keyfob $300 to replace?

Bought 2013 4runner used at dealership, they only had one key. Who loses these things in less than a year of ownership? My mistake for not including that in the deal, truck was just traded in, not even detailed yet, and I got a great deal on it comparing to what else was listed in my region. Had to go out of state to buy, so when I went to local dealer to try and order another remote, I was told $170 and change for the key and $129 for the programming and that I had to make an appt. They also told me I cant get any other key, not even a valet type, because they are chipped. Anyone else with this experience? Sure hate to pay $300 for a spare key but what choice do I have?

You can try some locksmiths but being so new I doubt they carry the keys yet, dealers do this stuff because they know they have you bent. I bet more then not, the second key is in someone's desk and if you buy they will just wait three hours and then pull it out of the desk and say here you go!

Do you have AAA?, if so call them up say you lost your keys, you might save some money, and they will send someone to you. Just make sure you have title in your name or other document showing its yours or they can't make a key.

Good luck, oh and sometimes that's the price you pay for driving new cars, items haven't had the time to make it to the secondary shops yet, and dealers know they can cash in on it.

The chipped key can be found online for around $30, and you can program it yourself if you buy a pirated TIS software or maybe find someone else that has it locally.

Looks to be ~$15 for a key blank with internals on ebay. Pick up the techstream cable and head over to the techstream thread and program yourself.

In my younger years, I was more impulsive when trading vehicles and usually only ever had 1 key with me. After the deal was done, the dealership would ask me to send them the other one but I almost never got around to it and they never followed up.

I bought a chip key on ebay for $21 and Techstream for $29, paid a junk yard key guy $2 to cut the key and programmed it myself. A lot of hassle but it worked.

Since then I found some places will make a clone of your key - they read the code on yours, write it into the new key. No programming, no hassle. I found ACE hardware for $69 and I`m sure there are others to do that. It will be a basic key, no buttons for lock/unlock.

I'll point out one thing about key cloning, if you ever need to reset the module and register the keys; you won't be able to because you only have 1 key code. Which means it will have to go to the dealer to be reseeded, which will be expensive and cannot be done by anyone but a dealership or Toyota certified/approved locksmith/shop. You can add/register new keys as long as you have 1 Master Key, if you don't you're SOL.

As for the keys, well they are all-in-one units; that's how most keys are these days (they used to be separate chipped keys and fobs.) The "Smart" Keys are a little more expensive (about $300 for just the key.) It depends on the cut of the key itself, I don't remember if they are now using a new key pattern vs. the older keys that 4th gens used, not to mention if the security code is compatible (meaning that you may not be able to get a 4th gen key and have it cut and programmed the same.)

There are companies that sell "blank keys" on Ebay and Amazon, from what I have heard you get what you pay for. Usually most of them are willing to exchange DOA keys, but some can be a pain about it (I remember one member said they had to get like 3-4 keys before one finally worked and they were in the process of fighting for their money back.)

Either way, welcome to owning a modern vehicle; nothing is cheap anymore.

As for people losing stuff? You'd be surprised what goes missing/breaks with some people. I had a lady who came in once with 400miles on the odo with a small fender bender in the rear, then next week she comes in with the whole front end crunched up. Some people should just not be allowed behind the wheel.

The only real difference between a Valet Key and a Master Key is the actual key cut (though the chips do show up as a "Valet Key" in the module, for what purpose I can't remember...)

The keys actually act identical from an immobilizer standpoint, its just the end of the key is cut slightly different than the master; just enough that it unlocks the doors and the ignition cylinder, but it can't unlock the glove box.

This part number will probably change to something else but should only be $35.00 list plus programming. Only one chip to program so it should be 1/2 of what you were quoted.

To be sure -check your key for a 0, G or dot on the steel part of key near the head. Mine has a G. Make sure this matches the new one before they cut it. It has to do with the FCC ID.
You need to talk to a real parts guy and not an order taker!

Once it's cut you can have it programmed by whoever

Yes, shank is the same. If you needed an extra key w/o chip it is a TR47 key.
It will only open doors and will not start vehicle. If alarm is set - idk, it might set it off?! And you might be able to use the plain key in ignition at accessory position to turn off or you might have to have the chip key...haven't tested this scenario.

Here's my 2014 4Runner LTD KEY FOB chewed by our dog yesterday(25SEP2015). all the micro switches(buttons) are broken..so the electronics is gone..though the key itself is still good.

Today; Price quote for the remote from a dealership here in Chesapeake VA was $183, (if I needed the key, would have been another $80) BUT they matched the internet price for an OEM of $135(Remote only). and the programing to my 2014 4runner is $83.
