Factory Keyless Entry 1999 Limited, do I have it?

Hi, I am brand new to this site & have read alot on here about the factory keyless entry found on the 1999 limited. This vehicle is new to me & I would like to know if I can program the keyless entry fob. I have read the procedure & it's not working.
I have the red flashing light on the dash, all the door locks work great from the front door switches & I can lock & unlock all doors with the key in the door locks. Also the leave the key in the ignition feature works as I cannot lock the door with the key in the ignition.
Is there an absolute check to see if the keyless entry system is functional before I purchase a key fob? I can't get an alrm to go off either, but maybe I just have to set it? I can't find a manual for the factory installed "Anti Theft System" for a 1999 4Runner Limited. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, I just moved up to the 4Runner. I had a 1997 Rav4 previously (Rav4 World), it hit half a million km & still runs like a top, the new owner picks it up this weekend.

I haven't seen any 4Runners that doesn't have a key fob, so my inclination is Im sure you do. I have a 99 SR5 and it came with one. The fact you have the security light on the dash and that it is a Limited is also another indicator that you should have one.

They are not great units though, so maybe you have one that crapped out. I don't think there is an actual alarm either, just a fancy light that says its locked, someone else can confirm that.

My '97 SR5 didn't come with factory keyless entry or alarm. I preferred and installed an aftermarket alarm system that had more capability than the factory offerings.

A picture of your key fob would help in identifying whether it's a factory key fob or not.

Thanks for both your responses. I don't have a fob as yet? I want to see if the wireless lock/unlock feature is active before I order one. Is there a way to find out? The fob for the 1999 Limited is apparently HYQ1512Y. It has a little red light in the dash with "SECURITY" written underneath. This is apparently a "Factory" system as opposed to the dealer installed system with the box under the drivers seat? There is no central box under the drivers seat, as apparently this system uses the Vehicle ECU and several other components to operate. My question revolves around the fact that the doorlock actuators all work strong and it won't let me lock my keys in the ignition. Is this feature part of the wireless locking/unlock system? When I go through the "program a keyfob procedure" I do not get a cycling of the locks. It's close, as my security light blinks when I turn off the car.
Do I have to clear the last owners codes before I can enter the programming mode? If so how to I clear out existing codes.

Did you follow these instructions exactly?

Step 5 says "Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically) indicating successful entry into programming mode."
Maybe the fob has to be present in order for it to go into programming mode?

Thanks Monty, I thought that too? But I also thought that I may have to clear out the previous owners fob. He said his broke & he never replaced it.
I wonder if there is a sequence for clearing out the memory?

Key Fob Programming

Do This:

1. Start with the following conditions: you are in the vehicle
a. Key is out of the ignition
b. Driver door is open (all other doors are closed)
c. Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter)

2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out. <In Out>

3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. Cycle the power locks 5 times. Use an even pace and try to go relatively fast. <Lock Unlock Lock Unlock Lock Unlock Lock Unlock Lock Unlock>
b. Close, then open the drivers door. <Close Open>

4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as before). <Lock Unlock Lock Unlock Lock Unlock Lock Unlock Lock Unlock>
b. Insert the key into the ignition <In>
c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF. <On Off> (x1 = Add mode, x2 = Rewrite, x3 = Confirmation, x4 = Prohibition...see Post #12 by TheDurk for more info)
d. Remove the key from the ignition. <Out>

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically) indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.

6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter simultaneously for 1 second.
b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle (LOCK then UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming. If the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps 6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted.
c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will operate the vehicle. Including any old transmitters.

7. Close the driver door.

We're missing an <In> somewhere. I'm thinking the <In> should be between 4a and 4b, but it might also go after 2 or after 3b. You might try all of those and respond back with the correct one.

Thanks Chase, This is the sequence I thought I tried? I'm not sure what you meant by <in> though in your response?
I did notice that some here had to try several times before it would take.
I also noticed that some had to physically coax their lock buttons up & down when using the armrest switch simultaneously, I'll try that & let you know.

If you look at Step 2, you put the key IN the ignition and then OUT. Then, at Step 4d, you pull the key OUT. So somewhere between 2 and 4d, the key needs to go back IN. I'm thinking it goes IN between 4a and 4b.

When I did it, it took several tries. With the vehicle being 15 years old, the motor that moves that latches gets tired. Just take your time and help it out whenever it doesn't go all the way up/down. Also, make sure you remember which side of the lock button is lock and which is unlock. Also, don't go too far with the key and let the ignition start up or you'll have to start over. You might also get a friend to sit in the passenger seat and read the instructions.

I understand your line of thinking here, but I don't think that matters. I'm thinking the truck will sync itself to whichever fob is within range when you go thru the steps listed in the instructions. Regardless, it's probably pointless to continue trying unless you have a fob to program.
You might try one of these - less than 20 bucks, free shipping to Canada, and they've sold over 1,200 of them so they must be ok.

Thanks for all your help, this is encouraging. I tried the activation steps 6 or 7 times last night to see if I could get it to enter the program mode with no luck. I wanted to know for myself if I could enter this mode before I purchased a keyfob. I am going ahead & ordering a fob, as Monte says, it might require that in order to go forward?

Thanks to all of you that helped out. I'm not sure what was different in Durk's service bulletin sequence but it worked wonderfully, first try. I cleared out the old codes (as the locks cycled twice at the end of the procedure). Now I can order the key fob & proceed with the add a code sequence & all should be wonderful...
We are "uber" stoked about this truck as it's a 1999 Limited in millennium silver in perfect condition at 15 years old. First thing I did 3 weeks ago is have it rust-proofed as here in the B.C. coastal mountains they use a ton of salt in the winter... We hope to keep it in mint original condition for as long as possible, I've always been a sucker for older model cars...

Depends. I have an SR5 and went to look at the window sticker. Mine did not come with keyless entry but it was an add on package so I got it (Option package 3 or GK) . I do not have a blinking light since that is probably for an alarm so I
will say that an absolute base SR5 does not have keyless.
However I did see something odd on window sticker - heated exterior mirrors were standard. Not that I need them in south Texas but I guess it is automatic since I have not seen any sort of switch in 14 years

If you have the heated mirrors, they are turned on with the switch for your rear defrost - at least that's the way it is on my Limited.

Hey Brah, if you have lock switches on your armrest try the sequences in the above threads. If you get the end result of the locks cycling once or twice by themselves, pick yourself up a wireless keyfob.
To be honest, I don't know of too many vehicles of our caliber that didn't come with remote locks after 2001? You may not have an alarm, but I'll bet you have this keyless feature on your truck & didn't know it?

The only evidence is if you have the chirper gadget on the inside right (passenger side) fender near the firewall. The electronics are all built in to the Body ECU and Backdoor ECU.

Or try the programming instructions in my Post #12 above and see if you can get the system to respond as Chrez suggests. They did make a Body ECU without wireless so it is possible. My '99 SR5 definitely has it, so it needs to be a bare bones SR5 to not have it.
