I guess I'll be the first to ripp on these tires on this thread. My set of OEM Dunflops were literally garbage. They tramlined all over the freeway, hydroplaned in heavier than normal rain, side walls were too soft and gave the truck a "mushy" feel (like grandma's oldsmobile), uneven circumferance - resulting in steering wheel vibration (beleave me it wasn't due to them being unbalanced; balanced 2wice), and they would always trigger my VSC around corners.

That's why I sold them for $350 bucks (2weeks old) ....

So after driving on the Dunlops for just two weeks, you experienced all of this? And rate the tires as garbage?

I didn't experience hydroplaning in mine in the heaviest of rain even at highway speeds. I would only expect something like that to happen when the tread wears down to 2/32" or less....not on a 2-week old tire.

no I think that you are right. the Pirelli is a lower profile more rubber on the road. i noticed when I was driving home that the whole vehicle seemed down a little.

FINALLY, someone bought the Scorpion ATRs. Where did you find that coupon and how did you get them so cheap??! All the Discount Tires in the greater Bay Area want around $800 for a set, before any rebate/coupon. Looks like I'll be driving to Sacto.

How do you find the noise/ride after the Dunlops? And is the trcuk really lower to the ground, or just an illusion?

yes....I think the truck is lower to the ground maybe by 1/2 inch or my seat was lower.

road feel is up easily 50% traction no comparison with the dunlops. Now it truly feels like a 4WD able to tackle any POS that may get in my way.

I think they originally put the Dunlops on to make the Runner look taller IMHO.

The coupon is on America Tire/Discount Tire web site and is only for Calif. better hurry sale ends the 20th of October.

OK, found the coupon. Thanks.

Did you order black lettering specifically or are the tires turned around? I'll call my nearest store tomorrow but online there are only RWL version available, which sucks. I hate white lettering!

Also, how is the road noise compared to the Dunlops?

I'm curious about the tire height... surely all 265/65-17 tires will be the same size, regardless of brand, or are the measurements slightly different for each brand? Does anyone know? The 4runner is low enough as it is, I don't want to lose any mroe height.

glad you found the coupon. I specifically said no white lettering and they had them in stock at the Arden Drive America Tire. not sure about the potential lowering and I assume that all tires are the same but. Road noise is better than the dunlops so far but it is an AT tire......

In theory, they should be the same size, but I think there are differences among brands when it comes to size. I know for a fact that my Discoverers ATRs (265/65/17) are nearly a full inch WIDER as measured at the tread contact patch then the Dunlops. They look fatter and they are fatter, even though they are listed as the same size. So I think it's possible that one tire may be marginally taller or shorter than another tire of the same listed size.

Pirelli ATR Scorpions

OK. 1st drive to work. the 4Runner is not lower just appears that way I am not sure why.

Pirelli on a 4Runner is kinda like adding the best speakers to a good stereo. They add road feel I assume with other premium tires like the ones you guys and gals run. Revos. Coopers, Miches, Nittos and Goodyears. They have a substantial presence on the pavement giving the feeling of riding lower but actually they are the same. They handles curves like a race tire, tight and neat (no rain today) Due to the fact that they put more rubber on the road I pick up more bumps but that is only common sense. When the road is smooth they are like a racing tire and I am not kidding.

So far happy as a guy lookin' for a church goin' girl

The pics look good and your comments are excellent.

Let me ask you as I've read in a number of the reviews, there were three 'cons' against the tire and I don't know if these are true or not.

I ask this as not to diss the tires or your purchase, but to gain added insight as a possible purchase. These tires caught my attention in a positive way!

The reviews said:

1) when parked in a cold garage or outside, flat spots form on the tires and need 2-3 miles or driving in the morning to 'work them out'

2) The sidewalls were 'soft' and not stiff like a good AT tire should be.

3) The tires are marginal on ice and snow.

Again, could someone point out if the above were are valid or just people crying in their beer.

I read those cons, too, but am not too worried. AFAIK the flat spotting is indeed a known issue (I read somewhere that Pirelli admitted as much) but is only apparently a problem where it gets below freezing, which is not problem for me here in coastal CA.

I read one comment on some tire review site about weak sidewalls and think that it's baloney... every tire has some comment about "weak sidewalls" if you read enough reviews but comments from the tire dealers I talked to and my own conclusions playing with a tire in a showroom are that the sidewalls are pretty stiff for a P-rated truck tire.

Finally, define "marginal". They are clearly not aggressive AT tires and will clearly not be as good in the snow as many other AT and snowflake tires. Again, not a big issue for me since I go up to the snow only a couple times a year, but I always take snow and ice performance reviews with a grain of salt (pardon the pun).

People seem to expect non-studded tires to be able to keep a good grip on ice -- ain't going to happen, whatever the tire, unless the laws of physics are suddenly moot. Same with snow... the stuff is inherently slippery and driving behavior has as much if not more more to do with success in snow than any tire in my experience. I've seen morons driving at 50mph in a blizzard with plenty accumulated snow on the road. Not even the best tire or 4wd system will save them in an emergency situation.

My main reason for getting the Pirellis is the reportedly good road manners and decent performance in dry, loose, off-roading conditions. If you're in a heavy snow region or like to go mud-grinding then there are probably better tires out there.

At this point just having purchased them I can say the following.

1) The weak sidewall mushy comment is silly. the dunlops had that issue for me.

2) The tire rated #1 in snow and ice with several million miles being reported. over goodyear, over bfg, over michelin. I doubt that would have occurred without some serious tenacity in the white stuff

3) I have no way to evaluate the ice/snow question for myself YET.

4) The Pirelli website lists these tires as the snow and ice pick for their line of tires.

5) The hard spot due to freezing temps is well documented and usually rounds out in about 2-3 miles of driving.

So as soon as I get a chance I am heading to Tahoe or Mt Shasta to try these puppies out. I know just the place. Will keep you up to date.......

weak sidewall. must have been a meth tweeker.

Meth tweeker, that's a good one.

The reason I posted is that I have three tire choices on my desk as I write and have all of these at my Discount Tire store for quote and trade in with the Dunlops.

The Cross Terrain is the most expensive followed by the AT2 and then the Pirelli which is $260.00 for a set of four less expensive than the CT's.

Appreciate your posts.

I was considering the same three tires as you... CrossTerrains are expensive but by all accounts very good on the road. However, I wanted something a bit cheaper and with a bit more off-road capability for those rare occasions I actually leave the pavement.

The Mich AT2 is so new that there's really no meaningful feedback yet. However, the original LTX AT would have been too aggressive an off-roader for me, so I assume the AT2 is in a similar category.

I also considered the Bridgestone Dueler Revo but finally settled on the Pirelli having read many reviews and seen the not-too-agressive tread pattern up close. I get them put on today so will post some comments comparing them to my worn out (40K miles) Dunlops.

correction

Pirelli has a distinct and separate tire and ice snow tire which is not the Scorpion ATR as best I can figure out.

The Scorpion ATR rated high marks on Tire Rack Survey in snow and ice.

my bad. not enuf sleep.
