I had been talking to a couple of you in a different thread that had nothing to do with it so I figured I should start a new thread for it. I have read and been told that the cardinal red does not have clear coat. Mine has faded a lot on 3/4 of the truck, with one side being shiny. The kicker here is that it appears that the part that looks good does have a clear coat and is peeling. Thoughts?

I'm not familiar with the rarity/odd attributes around that color, like I've never seen an OEM paint job without clear coat?
I have brought back many paint jobs for friends using a quality orbital and compound. I live 25 minutes from Griots detailing supplies. Use a clay bar, wash, dry, compound (it's yellow, an all-in-one compound), then finish that off with a sealer.
I did my 4runner quickly/semi-halfassed cause it's a truck. However, my paint looked/looks great when washed 6 months later. It takes about 5-8 hours depending on your commitment level. On something like that, you would definitely notice a difference.
I have a bit of experience with base/clear and enamel paint jobs, but never personally buffed them with flaking clear coat. Someone with more experience can likely advise you further in regards to that.

It has definitely been repainted. I have a 7/96 Cardinal Red(the last month they were made in that color!) And I can verify that it is a single stage paint. Also, your Cardinal Red truck also has the sport package. This is the sport package that everyone forgot due to the hood scoop fetish caused by the later 1999+ sports.
What would be the best approach to restore it at this point then? Sand down and repaint it? Sand down the clear coat and try to shine the base coat (if that is even possible). I have access to a paint sprayer and have done work trucks before, never a whole vehicle. Can't be too hard though, just have to find a place to make paint booth for it.
Been in the detailing business for about 10 years now so I do have a little experience... Your paint has no clear coat on it and is considered a single stage paint... Red fades the quickest... The easiest way for you to restore this paint is using this product... Meguiars M83:

You will also need a dual action polisher ( a real one not the ones from auto parts store), and some light polishing pads...I'm going to dig around for some pictures to show you using this product. It's not going to restore your peeling paint but it will give you a finish I think you will be happy with

That's all that's needed... There's a bunch of companies that make them... I'm partial to the Flex but it has gotten a lot of use over the years:
