Just got back from having the truck inspected (2001 Limited). The driver's side rear brakes were thoroughly greased up, apparently from a leaking axle seal. Did a search here and didn't come up with any info on what's involved in replacing the rear axle seals. What's involved and are there any special tools involved? I've got a pretty decent range of tools, but the tech that inspected my truck said he thought it took some special tools and that he didn't want to mess with it. Help?

i posted a write up on this either here or at yotatech thats practically a complete walk through. you just remove your axle shafts, take it to a machine shop with new ABS excitor rings and seals and they press the old stuff off and the new stuff on.... go home, pull the seal thats in the axle housing, replace with a new one, and reinsert the axle shafts, tighten everything down, and bam... your done

Not trying to scare you off but I used that article on a 2001 without success. The new seal would not go in correctly. I tried freezing the seal and all sorts of tricks. Part of the problem was i was using a cheap harbor freight install tool and there wasn't enough mass to drive it straight. I finally got it wedged in enough to take it to a shop and have them do it. You may only need the axle seals and not all the other stuff on the shaft. Various opinions have discussed whether the leaking oil affects the other parts. In my case I only did the seals in the diff and no problems showed up later. i also caught it early.
