I'm sitting here in my hotel bored to tears (so bored I'm watching Dancing with Stars :bash: ). So anyway, Falls, you've been saying a lot that you're not all that impressed with the Revos. Well I'm with ya on that!

I hopped on the Revo band wagon when I got my 4Runner mostly due to me needing an A/T tire to get me through the mountains for work (and play of course). The Revo's are probably the best tire I've ever had in the rain! In deep snow and mud though I'm a bit disappointed. Honestly, I would say they're only a little bit better then the Dunlops in mud.

After the last snow storm we had in Pa I was trying to go up to a local spot on top of a mountain to play a bit. I got about 3/4 of the way up the trail when I spun down through the snow and reached the mud underneath. Revos turned into slicks and it didn't even attempt to go any further. So I backed all the way down the mountain (exciting, but not very fun).

Anyway, I've really been considering the BFG KO's although I've heard they suck in the rain once they start to get worn. Are they really that good off-road (mud, deep snow, sand, rocks)?

I know there are a lot of tire threads, I've probably read about every thread on this site . I'm just a poor, traveling, so bored I'm watching dancing with the stars, man.

Oh yeah, and white cheddar cheez-its are the best! :bigok:

Dancing with the stars....sorry that is pretty sad. I could tell you but you may already know. Michelin MLX or Michelin Alpines. If you truck in snow, they are tough.

I've heard good things about the Generals Grabbers too. Nitto's , GY Silent armor .

One thing you have to remember is that an AT tire is not a mud tire .

I like BFG , but not saying they are the best at all , a lot depends on the type of stuff you are in . I've already rolled up a BFG AT like a slick in gooey mud , I've seen even mud tires do that.

The thing I notice with the BFG is that they are slick in rain after they wear a bit but I think that happens with any tire , but a lot of my past experiences were with Pick up truck which are always light in the back anyway. I slid my Tahoe sideways in the rain with GY Wrangler AT's at literally 45 mph around a turn , talk about filling my shorts , I couldn't believe I didn't roll it.


I agree about the Revos in rain , they are excellent !! The ride is nice and smooth too. I bought them because I jumped on the band wagon too , that is the only reason.

I'm a BFG fan , but would not mind trying different ones , but I only have so much cash ...lol.

Needless to say, i am a BFG fan. However, i am a fan only after experiencing almost every tire out there.

I have had BFG on both my '02 4runner and my current ride. I recently replaced BFG AT KO with Firestone Destination M/T, but that's another story.

I do firmly believe that BFG AT KO to be the best AT tire on the market. It does well off-road, snow, and on-road. Yes, it is the weakest of the popular brands on-road, but it is far from being "unsafe". In Texas, it rains a lot...and heavy too. I never found the BFG AT KO to be anywhere undesirable in rain. Never. But, by design, i am sure that REVOs and Nittos may be better. However, those two tires have major faults that i find not acceptable for MY needs (on-road and rock off-roading). REVOs and Nittos have thin sidewalls...a big negative for rock crawling. REVOs and Nittos are not rated for heavy snow, which i need occasionally as i go to Colorado and hopefully, Utah in the future.

But, is BFG AT KO perfect?? No. I was perfectly happy with them on the highway...it was NOT any more noisier than Nittos or REVOs. So, those things never bothered me. However, they do suck in mud. And the reason why i replaced the BFG AT KO with Firestones is because of this very reason...but keep in mind that this applies to ALL all-terrain tires. And they may not flex as much as i would like over rocks.

So, if you want mud performance, then BFG AT KO will fall short on your expectations. For everything else, it should shine. Another minor reason in favor of BFG is its APPEARANCE. There are not many AT tire out there that has the same aggressive look of BFG AT KO. One look and you know what it is. It makes your SUV look better.

And no, i am not a tire salesman nor BFG spokesperson...as stated above, i now have Firestone Destination M/Ts.

I too am a victim to the Revo's. Although they were probably not worth 142 a tire, I still plan on using them to hier fullest. Yes I have been dissapointed by the Revo's , particularly when i was high centered, but there were too many variables. I was in a mud field once wit the dunlops and get woefully stuck, I came back with the revos and was able to ride it like nothing, odd. It could be better in the snow but is FAR better than the Dunflops, they couldn't even make it up a slight incline without VSC and spinning the tires kicking in. My next tire will prolly be BFG A/T KO. But I doubt that wont be until i hit 100k. By then they will already have updated the BFG line. lol. So about 3 years until I get new tires. Until then, I'm a Revo man.

The only problem with "Thai's Tire co." is every car or truck gets MT tires weather you need them or not ............. I can see it now old lady's going to church with MT tires on there Buicks

And there are better choices than General. To put it bluntly, General, and especially Continental, tire casings are crap. I'll say it again, you get what you pay for.

It's going to be hard to find a single tire that works in those 4 very different conditions.

For mud you want a tread with large voids that will throw off the mud when you spin them.
For snow, the opposite, plenty of narrower voids to hold snow, to adhere to the snow on the surface to improve traction (although there are 2 schools of thought on that).
For sand you want to float on top, not dig in, so a non-aggressive flotation tire is best.
For rocks a mud-type pattern but even more aggressive, and super strong side walls.
A rain tire is another catagory.
The composition of the rubber is a whole other factor.

The Interco tires such as the TSL series and SSR's seem to work well in mud + snow + rocks.

I kind of worded my prev. post a little wrong about the rain/slickness. Like I said having them on a pick up truck there is no weight in the back and anytime you would jump on it they would spin ( any tire would do that with an empty pickup bed ) , but NEVER had any problems with the front end of the truck in heavy rain as far as control goes.

With that said when I've had them on my SUV's , Blazer , s-10 blazer , Ford Explorer , Tahoe , suburban , where weight is distributed better on the vehicle there were NO problems at all , even after they wore down.

The reason I've said they are not the best , is because everyone has different needs and some feel differently about it and what they need . I have tried a lot of different tires , but they were mostly the stock AT that came with the trucks ( mostly GY & Firestone ) Naturally they are about as good as the Donlops that come on the 4R.(Especially the GY Wrangler RT/S ..... those are dangerous tires ...... good lord , they are the worst tire I've ever drivin , and when its raining ....hang on !! )

I will agree BFG's they are the best AT tire out , but that for me , other have different opinions and needs.

They are a safe tire and the toughest one out there I believe.

Looks , Thai said it all , no mistaken a BFG All-Terrain , by far the best looking !!!!!

I have Michelin Cross Terrains, and dont have any complaints. I know they are not an AT tire, but they are supposed to be "mud and snow" and have only heard good things about them, so figured I would post. I really dont know too much about tires, but I have never been impressed with any of the bridgestone tires that we have had (were not AT tires, and came stock on our 99 4runner, and 98 Rav4) And I personally would never go with a cheapo brand, I have always been a fan of Coopers BFGs and Michelins.
I know I have never owned any AT tires, so this whole post is probably worthless to you, but i figured i would throw in my 2 cents anyways.

I'll pimp the Nittos again as the best DD AT tire that can actually handle rough terrain and perform quite well in the wet and snow. Factory siped and solid water evacuation channels really enhance slick surface driving. In deep snow they are ok but not really made for it but most of your snows on regular roads teh Nittos can handle.

Also compare the price of Nittos to the others.

I have to agree Revo's are horrible in the snow. I had it on my previous 2003 4Runner and it let me down real bad. As you can see in the picture the snow was fresh powder and the Revo's wouldn't bite at all. I had to flag a passing tow truck for assistant to get the tire cables on. Once the cables were on I was able to drive out.

Were you pulled over on the shoulder or were you off the pavement in a ditch (what kind of surface?)

Even the Dunflops got me through stuff deeper than that as long as I was on the pavement/gravel. Off to the side I can move through that no problem with the BFG's.
