Fan clutch failed?

I noticed that even when my water temperature gauge is at a half and no longer raises, I could still turn the fan freely after shutting down.

Isn't the fan supposed to be directly connected to its pulley on the drive-belt when the water temperature is high and one should not be able to turn it freely after shutting down?

In most cases it has a centrifugal clutch. This means that it tightens up with rpm. Should be loose but a little friction when shutoff.

So is there a way to check if it actually tightens up with RPM?

I thought it was the the reverse, it operates at low RPM; since you only need the ran when the vehicle is either 1. stopped or 2. slowly moving. Low RPM indicates this.
The faster you move, the more air is being pushed across the radiator and makes the fan not needed.

Also. I have no idea if the fan clutch on these things are thermostatic or centrifugal, I was just describing how I thought a centrifugal operated. Granted, the one time I had one go; I said F it and put in an electric fan and never had a problem.

It is a temp controlled clutch. Fluid Controlled.
