Fan stopped working, then started again!?

Hi all, just driving along in my in my '06 4Runner SR5, turned on the fan for some heat and nothing, low, med, high speeds, different temps, tried everything, even the AC and nothing, so I gave up, left the fan control on high and drove on, cold, then, about 5 mins later.....heat in the face! Just started working by itself and is still fine, WTH? Is this common? Did it get stuck? Will this happed again? How do I get to the fan? Hoping that if this happeds again I can "kick start" the fan......HELP.......

BAD NEWS:

I had the same issue a number of years ago with a GMC Jimmy. After just a couple of times, the fan would not engage at all. It was the blower.

Be prepared, bet you experience the same.

Im gonna say its the fan speed resistor. That same thing happened to me last winter...during a blizzard...it sucked. A lot.

Probably just a failing blower motor but if it was really cold it could have frozen up.

Well it worked first thing this morning, now it doesn't work again........you think if it was frozen it wouldn't have worked early in the am, anyway where is this "fan speed resistor" & how do I get to it, also any pics of this and/or the blower?

That happened with my '03. What they told me was that water got in, froze up, and eventually the fan failed. It was quite expensive to replace.

The dealer feels it's the fan, if it was the resistor it would still work with limited speed control, the fan at the dealer is $180, Advanced Auto $108, fleabay $38.........what to do..........

That's false. Mine didnt work AT ALL when the resistor went.

The fan has to be removed in order to get to the resistor. Dealer got me for nearly $400 for that job. Sucked.

Well, when it stopped working I pulled he cabin filter reached in and gave the fan a spin (NOT RECOMENDED, fan can cut you), and it started to work, that's why I'm thinking its the fan......I can get a fan from fleabay for $38....

As I said earlier, IT IS THE BLOWER MOTOR.

I'm going to replace the fan, but in this TCS, (below), it says:
"Step C. Turn the ignition switch off and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
WARNING:
Failure to complete step “C” above may result in internal damage to the transfer case
shifting mechanism.

So I have to disconnect the battery terminal when changing the fan in order to avoid damage to the transfer case shifting mechanism?

over the years for various reasons ive always had the habit of disconnecting the battery for anything when working on my vehicles, so in these days where everything is connected somehow or way elecronically ,if toyota warns you ahead of time to do so, why wouldn't you?
