Farewell fellow 3rd genners

Due to a new job it was time for me to sell my 3rd gen and upgrade to a 5th gen. During the 5 years I've owned her she was trouble free and served me well. I seen her go from bone stock to slightly modified. I couldn't have done it with out this forum and the helpful people of the 3rd gen community. Thank you all!!! And now some farewell pics

OK. My brother traded in his 3rd gen for a fifth. Our relationship hasn't been the same since. I can't get over how big and ugly they are. I'm sure they have some performance gains...better...what? I dunno. I couldn't drive around in one. I'd feel like a space ship soccer mom in a retarded transformer...

I didn't like the styling at first, but have said before that they are really growing on me. I also like the grille of the trail edition a lot. The interiors are very nice as well. My only negatives are size and that with the design of the front end, I see it almost impossible to add some front armor without costing a ton of money and/or really changing the entire look of the front.
If my Runner dies for whatever reason, I'm sure I'll find myself behind the wheel of one of these.

Yeah, you're right, the 5th gens are closer to a mini van than a real off road vehicle. I feel that the 4th and 5th have just gotten too girlie and have strayed from what a 4runner is supposed to be. I would wait for a 6th but I don't see them going back to their roots and believe that my 3rd gen is a more capable off road vehicle, cheaper to maintain, and dead sexy.
Now if they design one with a 1st gen in mind...hook me up.

No one will buy a 4Runner that is designed with the 1st Gen in mind. The 4th and 5th Gens can still wheel and have decent aftermarket support. If no one buys the 4Runner then they have no reason to make them.
The 5th Gen may have some flaws but you would be hard pressed to find a new vehicle that is very similar to it besides the Xterra which is much more basic (rarely found with leather, rear leaf springs, etc.). Think about it; the Pathfinder, Rodeo, Explorer, Blazer, and Montero Sport have all gone the way of the Dodo bird. The 5th Gen 4Runner still follows the same idea of the SUV's of the 90's and for that I cannot say that I dislike it.

Are you nuts? Huge numbers of men would que up to buy a small BOF pickup or wagon body with a pop top. The reason car companies won't make them is not because people won't buy them, it's because car companies wouldn't make enough profit. They have a finite amount of money to invest in making vehicles to sell, and they learned in the 90s that there's more money in making upmarket luxury things that look like 4x4s than there is in making small utilitarian trucks with no frills. The rest is history. The 4Runner line is definitely one of the last holdouts, but make no mistake, Toyota has brutally citified it. The 4th and 5th gen trucks can be made to work offroad and made to work well, but it takes a fair bit of modding to match an early 4Runner's frame clearance, and even if you do it's still a whale.
Each generation of 4Runner has gotten slightly more suited for pavement-pounding soccer moms, and with the 4th gen that adaptation really started to come at the cost of stock off-road prowess. I don't mean to bag on your truck, but your argument makes no sense. The utilitarian styling and capability of the earlier gens is gone because of economics, not because people don't want it.
