fast clicking noise and orange dashboard light

Hi everyone,

I was going up a small hill today my car started making a clicking noise when i hit accelerate. An orange light also came on the dash. I didn't get a chance to see what the light was.

This happened because as I was going up, a car pulled infront of me so I got off the gas. Then as I got back on the gas it made this rapid clicking noise. Anyone else experience this issue?

My car is a 2014 sr5 2wd. Has about 800 miles so far

Stop and check your rear lift gate. I bet it's not completely closed. If it's not, it's hard to tell and you'll get the yellow triangle and in the lower left part of your instrument gauges, a red vehicle icon with open door symbol.

If it's not closed, it will gripe at you when do anything to make it open a bit like hit the gas or go uphill. Scares you the first time you see it on a new vehicle. That red door open symbol is not as noticeable with that big yellow flashing triangle in front of you.:biggrin1:
 
If it was really steep it may have been your hill assist disengaging and traction control kicking in to prevent rollback as mentioned above.

Uphill, with rapid throttle position change (in 2wd) likely resulted in a loss of traction and thus the traction control kicking in. I you changed the steering direction as well, it may have been vsc (vehicle stability control)

IIRC traction control and vsc have a buzzer, if it was uphill and just clicking and a light it was prob hill assist.

I'd bet this is your culprit ^^^^^

I have a steep driveway and at times I've had my hill assist kick in causing a very similar scenario as you described.
 
I back down a steep driveway and then immedatedly go up a steep hill when leaving home. I have had the same issue a few times. It was the traction control light.

Nope, no buzzer for VSC or TRC. When they kick in you hear a rapid clicking as they apply brakes to the wheel(s) without traction.
 
It is the traction control. If you use one foot to drive usually. Let off brake on hill then truck starts to roll backwards slightly prior to pressing the accelerator pedal. The traction control engages and won't allow full power to the wheels to prevent sliding. I found that on steep up hill grades I use two feet and don't let off brake until I am already applying accelerator pressure. Ever since I started doing this I never have the traction control activate on steep grades.

You are correct that the TCS has no buzzer, but I think I recall the VSC beeping at me once before (it might be in my head though) :noidea:

I don't really drive this truck hard enough to get it sideways, but on my old yota when you throw it sideways hard enough to get the tail end to slide out, VSC beeps at you while correcting your oversteer. An additional light lights up too along with the TSC light, that's how I know VSC is working. Why am I looking at the dash instead of the road while I'm sliding sideways? Good question :tape:

Cause the road isn't beeping of coarse...:horn:
 
I've noticed the same thing on my 4R from time to time. Last time it happened, I looked at the dash and noticed that it was a light with the pic of a steering wheel on it. In almost 2 years it's happened less than 5 times.
 
Just purchased a used '13 Limited ... first 4Runner. Love it so far. Last night I had this clicking/lack of power/dash light experience. Scared me that something is wrong with my 'new' truck. Hopefully, as y'all have said, this is somewhat normal and not a sign of trouble.

Ya it's nothing to worry about. It's basically the fun switch. It tells me that traction control is trying to work and my wheel is slipping/sliding. Which in turn means I'm having fun haha. When I get stuck or my movements slows too much I just come to a stop and engage 4Wheel drive. Nothing to worry about. You haven't done anything wrong and it's normal.
 
Hill start assist, for sure. The warning light is orange, and the clicking noise is alarmingly loud. It kicks in if the truck rolls back like a foot or two before getting on the gas. Which on a steep hill, is right about when you get your foot from the brake to the gas... =)

Even though the noise is loud, it's normal. I hear that the down hill assist makes the same noise as well.

It's the hill start assist
