That bites Big time.

My understanding (since mine hasn't bit it ...Yet) is they are rebuildable via a kit. See details in this post, its for an LC100 which is what our 01-02 systems are based on and use the same parts. Luck all.

There is a guy named Andy Le in the 100 Series Facebook group that rebuilds these as well. I have reached out to him about the 3rd Gen 4runner and he says it's the same basic unit internally and he can get the parts no problem. I have thought about using him to rebuild a unit and keep a few rebuilt units around for members that might need them. Trying to think of those items that are hard to source like this.

Long shot, but any chance you still have the good condition master assembly? Mine’s starting to go.

Had to happen in winter, right?
If you don't mind, could you elaborate on why you believe it is beginning to fail? Any unusual noises? Pedal travel increased?

Yes, it bit some, was expected so not as bad.
Did the research on rebuilding like you have same info hadn't made a decision either way till I had to.

Picture this: City traffic 40-45 mph medium traffic tapping brakes occasionally the last tap was short stroke
hard pedal two handed steering wheel grab stand on pedal no brakes kind of thing.
Rebuilt Vs New for this particular part new seemed the better choice. The one I received stretch wrapped had
release agent on rubber bellows wet with fluid in Res, That worth the extra cost to me maybe I'll get 200k mi out of it.

Edit: Swap out is way easier.

My 01 4runner is making the exact same sound is at GX in the video attached in the first post on the forum linked below. Is that a pretty clear sign that its the master cylinder?
Unfortunately, I have only put about .02 miles on it, but the brakes were pretty spongy the 3 times I used them backing out of my garage and then back in again. Now it isn't running so I cant test any further (haven't figured out why its not running, but that'll be another post).
