First off, everyone is unharmed. Anyways, wife was driving my 4Runner, turning at an intersection and hit a patch of black ice while making the turn. She slid into the oncoming lane and into the side of a car stopped at the intersection. Here's the aftermath of my baby:

I only have liability insurance, so the repair will be on my dime :ybrick:

The only thing I wonder, is would it be worth replacing the bumper from a parts yard myself, and having an auto body shop do the rest? I just wonder if it's worth doing anything besides simply turning it over for the repair, and writing a big check.

For the record, we have an emergency fund for just such occasions. But I don't want to get destroyed by a body shop.

Now that I'm a married man, might be time to buy liability insurance...

Glad everyone is ok. Hood, fender, little trim panel under headlight & bumper maybe headlight, all easily replaceable yourself. I've always had full coverage, fire, theft & collision. Only $78 a month with State Farm.

But seriously, try DIY. Hit up car-part.com and dig around locally for a bit there to see what you come up with. Any body shop is going to start at a minimum of $600 for that bumper + paint + misc garbage underneath that probably also broke.

Yes I would certainly fix that Look at my album and see how bad my wife tore mine up. I only spent about 900.00 to fix mine so yours should not be that bad. Mine was totaled, but I love these 4R's so much I brought her back from the dead.

I'd say hit up a junkyard. Your black paint makes it easy too: you can get the new psrts professionally painted for several hundred, or you can personslly roll on Black Rustoleum Enamel, $50 Paint Job style. Sand and buff it good and no one will ever know.

I'm bummed to hear you only have liability, but glad to hear you have an emergency fund.
I would definitely watch Craigslist for part outs. Getting OEM parts is MUCH superior to aftermarket, but brand new are very expensive. Might have a tough time finding a '99-02 bumper that isn't chrome, but you might get "lucky". Fender should be relatively easy.
Once you have the new-to-you bumper and fender, I would install the parts, and take it to a body shop to fix the hood, and do the paint work.

Glad everyone is ok. Time to learn a bunch an do all the work yourself. Vehicle expense is not really what i would use my emergency fund to buy, maybe a cheap camry to drive while it fix the runner. Nice platform, sorry for your loss, now you'll know to pony up for full coverage if you can afford it. However, certain people like my dad, who hit a cop car, just have bad luck, so make her drive cheap safe cars always. It can always be worse.

Glad you are all OK. Maybe it's time to look at a good aftermarket front bumper. If you compare money spent on replacing an OEM vs. aftermarket, it might be worth spending a little extra and getting something a bit more.. robust. I was rear ended about a month or so after I got my 4runner. I wish I would have just replaced the rear bumper with an aftermarket at the time. LOL.

I wonder how many 4runners we lose every year due to black ice...

I don't recommend to buy coverage for the 4Runner

In my experience I had my liability with my 4Runner coverage also. Let me tell you why not to buy coverage for your truck because insurance companies don't pay the full amount for repairs also they don't covered Toyota genuine parts unless your truck has under 20,000 miles. They just pay cheap parts or aftermarket also it becomes those parts rusted less than a year. And truck paint become faded.

If I were you don't buy coverage for your truck with that extra money per month for additional coverage put it in your jar or under the pillow to save that money for your 4Runner repairs in the future trust me also it saves you from your driving record.

I recommend you to buy body parts in the junk yard.

Your paint code is located on the driver side located by VIN number.

Bumper is not complicated to replaced and you need also to replace the Front reinforcement to save frame damage in the future oem important

Collsion

Hi guys, was in a collision myself. Have all the parts to replace just need advice on how to reweld new inner fender. I have noticed there is a flange on the underside that must be spot welded although it doesnt go all the way up. It wouldn't tuck behind the fire wall would it? Wondering how I can replace as clean as possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Dang man I have no idea how I missed this! So glad you guys are alright! Hopefully you have it fixed by now or at least on the way. A great place for parts is G&R off of Columbia Blvd. They usually have quite a few 4runners there.

As for insurance, I have more than liability on mine. Not sure of all the coverage. Uninsured motorist, theft and "agreed upon value" because of all the aftermarket stuff on it. Costs a bit more but for me its worth it.

Happened to me to. Coming around a jug handle entering the highway. It was wet, raining. Lost control and hit the guard rail. Although I didn't dent anything. Just scratched the plastic bumper. It could have been very very bad. As cars were moving 65+mph.
