Fender flares on the limited 4runners

I am trying to find a 3rd gen and seems like most of the ones i want have the huge limited flares on the sides and on the doors witch is what i do not want. Anyone take them off? or is it possible to just put some of the sr5 flairs on it? Model wise not really sure what i want. Something around a 97 or maybe a 2001 if i can find one for the right price.

Do they really look that terrible? That truck above looks pretty good to me. If the owner ditched the running boards, ditched the "fat-lip" 99 style bumper for a 97 style or ARB, and finally he added a $1000 COIL lift kit, I think it would look awesome.

I like my fender flares but I am bit biased. There is no easy (cheap) way to remove them without your truck looking like junk. Toyota drilled holes into the body to mount them.

Most of the guys with SR5 flares wish they had limited style flares.

I'm with the OP... I don't like the way the door cladding looks at all. I think these trucks look much cleaner with bare doors and wide SR5 flares. The flare design and leather seats are the two biggest reasons I avoided buying a Limited model.

I think most of the guys wishing for limited style flares are the ones w/the skinny chrome strips or the skinny black SR5 flares.

Yep. Mine is an SR5... Sport Edition. The 99-01 Limiteds have flares just like yours, and the ones in the picture that the OP put up.

Just like I envisioned BADASS!

But I do prefer BFAD's "fat SR5" flares because they leave the doors bare which is better in many ways, mainly less paint to fade (since painted plastic will always fade as opposed to factory dipped metal)

Those are limited flares, no? My SR5 flares are different on the back doors than that. Part if the flare is on the body, part od on the door. Just curious, becaus I'm getting confused between you and Brian's convo.

BFAD's truck is a 99-01 style (non-limited) SR5 with factory flares.

My truck is a 97 Limited with factory flares that include plastic "boards" attached to the full door length.

In the pics above I had my flares removed (more details in my thread) because the factory dark-grey flares had faded. I chose to have them repainted factory black to match the body.

Until today, I thought BFAD had a limited truck. I always assumed that SR5 flares meant the thin black plastic flares.

Just to clarify: SR5's were available with 3 different types of fender flares....

All three of the above options could be referred to as "SR5" flares. The Limiteds, and the Limiteds ONLY, have the flares that include the door cladding. You will never see door cladding on an SR5 unless it was installed after the fact by the owner.

In my opinion if you don't like the flares, don't buy a Limited. Once you ditch the running boards and the front bumper it does look better though. Personally I like the flares, they keep the 4Runner cleaner. If I do bump something on the trail, it's cheaper to buy a fender flare and have it painted than to buy an entire fender (same with the doors and rear 1/4 panel). The paint on my 4Runner is spotless, but the flares/door cladding have multiple little blemishes and door dings; if anything they protect the vehicle.

In my opinion the Limited's look like grocery getters that soccer moms would drive.

When looking for a 4runner I specifically excluded them for that reason. I also highly prefer the 98- bumper vs the 99+

I like the basic look of toyota's. I love the 95-97 front grilles on Tacoma's, and I like my skinny chromes. Might just be me though.

I bought a 98 SR5 skinny chrome, desert dune, 5speed, 4x4, with locker.

OK, I'll admit it, I'm that guy with the skinny SR5 chrome strips. I removed them as well as the running boards the same day I purchased the truck for a cleaner look. But now my truck looks a bit naked. I was thinking of purchasing some bushwacker fender flares. Anyone know how they compare with the factory fender flares?

Like the OP, I'm shying away from over-sized fender flares.

I must agree. I like the Limited with the flares and body clad. It does help protect the vehicle a little more.

Replacing a single flare piece ..... Junkyards, Autorepair parts stores for aftermarket replacements or new parts from "Camelback Toyota Online Parts" would work.

What color are your flares? I recently had a total loss with my Millenium Silver 4runner and all my flares are solid and I might be selling them when I get it back.
