Fender liner mod corrosion

All,

I have searched this topic and found only one instance of anyone even making mention about this, and I do not know if he was well informed.

My question is: When performing the fender liner mod (moving up the liner to make room for tires) or trimming the liner/ removing mudflaps, does this create a propensity to rust quicker?

I live in an area that has harsh winters and salty roads. I do not want to accelerate any potential rust by creating a pocket where this salt can go. I also do not want to have to run to the car wash every day (or week) after I drive on said salted roads and blast water into where I think this could be forming.

Have any of you living around snow noticed any corrosion issues?

Moving the front of the fender well didn't look like it would create any issues. However, the mud flap removal is an issue. I jus put 285's on last week and I'm already freaking out about the debris covering the side of the 4Runner. I am going to put some aftermarket mud flaps on to fix this issue, just don't know what kind yet.

How are you able to fit mudflaps at all? With 285s on full flex, my tires go right up against the body mount chop that was done. There is literally no room for mudflaps, unless they were 1 mm thick. In fact, the fender liner in the rear had to go too... I had to chop half of that off because it kept catching on the tires, which caused it to bend and warp.

how much offset are you running on your wheel? I run 285's, mud flaps, no BMC, with no rub on -10 17x9
 
Get rid of the spacers, they are not helping anything, if you want to double up I have a set collecting dust. I used a heat gun to form the mud flaps this past weekend after getting the lift 3" and tires 285 installed. I put a 380lb man in the passenger seat as my test subject for the road. I haven't taken it off road yet, 400 miles new, waiting for the pretty to get wiped off first.

Everyone's 4Runner is a little different. I have very little room back there. Universal mudflaps range in sizes. Just have to drill holes in the new ones to boot them in existing holes

I was under the impression that running stock Trail wheels with 285 Duratrac tires was pretty much guaranteed to rub on OME suspension without spacers

The further out you space your wheels, either with wheel offset or wheel spacers, the more they will rub and the more you have to do to git rid of the rub.
 
My 285's are rubbing the hell out of my rear fender. What's everyone paying for the body mount chop? Like the OP said, any negative experience?
 
Yeah ok, before everyone here gets super horny about body mount chops let's take a second to remember what your body mount actually does. Yes, it hold the body to the chassis, but there is a reason the mount is made from the highest strength steel relative to any other part of the frame.

In an offset front collision, the body mount prevents the front wheel from being driven up into the passenger compartment and hopefully allows you to keep your legs attached to your body.

Oh horny lordy NO BMC, it means certain death! And don't lift any higher than 1.2" because the 4R will then have a propensity to fall onto its side. Even while parked. In a high wind.

You have a problem with people posting actual facts about what the downsides of a BMC could be? Really?

Nobody said anything about certain death but if you do a chop you are compromising an important safety devices and I doubt if very many people reading this knows that.

Congratulations on using the word propensity.

I tried to consolidate information regarding the risks of doing a BMC and an attempt to brainstorm on how to do a "better" BMC that wasn't as deleterious to the safety design demanded of it. It didn't really take off too much, but some interesting points were made in terms of a BMC in connection with aftermarket bumpers and sliders.

Great thread and certainly worth a read. Anyone considering a bmc should at the very least take pause to consider the ramifications.

--No, just poorly reacting to the 'getting horny' start to the comment. I have a predispositional inclination for counteraction I should evade to circumvent subsequent contention.
--A BMC does what it is supposed to do: give more room for larger tires.
--If doing a BMC it really is best to move the high-strength metal back or to fully replace it.
--That steel is really tough stuff!
