Fender rubbing issue.

I've had this issue a while and it's kinda driving me nuts.

My runner had been in an accident before I got it. It was on the passenger front, and best I can tell the front bumper and passenger front fender were replaced. However whoever did the work didn't go out of their way at all. Now I've fixed a lot of the minor stuff already, like the radio antenna, some lights, and all. I did notice the marker light is not exactly fit just right, but it's not falling out or anything.

I bumped up to 265/75/16 tires, like many here, and assumed I wouldn't have issues. Well ever since it's been one thing after another on that passenger front fender.

At first I discovered it lacked most of the fasteners. The lower half would pop out any time I flexed or turned sharp. I finally got that fixed by getting a bolt in the very bottom, but after that, it apparently put strain on the fender flare and put it in the way of the tire.

I had to take the flare off completely. Found all the clips are broken, only the screws holding it on and maybe not even all of those (2 out of 3 I think)

Even with the flare off on sharp right turns it still rubs slightly on the rear side of the wheel well.

It drives well and no strange tire wear or issues with steering, so I don't think I have anything going on with the mechanical parts in the running gear. But the evidence concludes that the tire on the passenger side is closer to the fender well than on the drivers side, which has no clearance issues.

Any suggestions? #1 I will likely need new fasteners of several types to re-attach the fender and flare. #2 before I take a BFH to it, what should I look for out of line?

I've almost broken down and taken it to the body shop, but if a few good hits and some screws will fix it, I'm game. My runner isn't perfect, but it looks pretty nice once all it's pieces are installed, so it bothers me to run around with trim missing and loud grinding noises when I turn. (In other words, it's ghetto!)

Hammer back the area where it rubs and replace the fasteners/clips.

265/75/16s normally don't rub.

I second Jayrolla, get an alignment. That wheel may be all out of whack.

Post picture of where it's rubbing. How is your alignment? A little more caster may stop the rubbing.

I'll try to grab one shortly of the spot it's hitting.

But you might be on to something with the alignment. I didn't think of that playing a part.

When I tried to get it aligned, the tire shop said they couldn't align it due to my tie rods being worn. It's not really behaving badly so I've continued to drive it while I collected up ITRE's, OTRE's, and LBJ's, which are now sitting in a box waiting for me to find time to install them.

My steering wheel is out of whack leaning left significantly, so I know steering needs adjustment. If it's an alignment issue that would be great, fixing that is already in the works.

Install your new parts and get it aligned. If your LBJ's haven't been replaced in awhile, or at all, that is a pretty high priority. Hopefully you bought OEM LBJ's...

They should center your steering wheel when they do the alignment, or at least, they are supposed to....

Hopefully you can see where it rubs here.

You bet, already researched that. Everything is OEM, bought ITRE's from Japan, whole 9 yards. I have no idea what has been done in that area before I purchased the 4runner, so I just decided to replace everything. Thanks though.

I had not figured on the rubbing issue being connected to the alignment, so I really hope that is the case and getting the new parts on and an alignment cures the rubbing.

Any ideas on getting the clips and mounting hardware? I think it's 4 fender flare clips that go in the rectangle holes, then another assortment of push in fasteners, and metric bolts with washers.

With that sized tire the only foreseen rubbing on the pinch weld would be caused from using a wheel spacer or low offset aftermarket wheels. If neither of those, alignment as mentioned already is really the only other possibility unless something in the front end suspension has been bent from an accident.

No spacers and stock wheels.

Thanks all, this information has helped a lot and saved me from working at the wrong end.

Given what you guys are telling me I'm hoping it's just the alignment. Once I get the steering parts on I can get the shop to see what's going on and see if the castor is out of whack.

It is possible something is bent from the collision, I haven't noticed anything under there looking damaged but it would be easy for me to miss as I haven't been looking for it specifically. I assumed it was more of a body panel out of place issue.

I'll try to remember to post back when I figure out what it is for sure.

When you say whole nine yards did you replace the Lower Control Arms (LCA)? I had a motorcycle hit me last year on my drivers side, just about head on my tire. It completely knocked my alignment out but nothing was bent that I could see. I brought it to an alignment shop and they were able to get it aligned fine but it just didn't seem "right". When I replaced my LCA bushings I noticed the rear LCA tab was bent from the impact.

Something to take look at. Just giving you another possibility from my own experience. When I find my post, I'll throw the link here for you.

EDIT: OK I found the link. I posted it back in November last year. LCA Tab Bent - Tire Rubbing on Fender

Thanks. I haven't replaced anything as of yet but I have the parts collected, but didn't include LCA's.

I'm definitely going to look that over very closely before I call it done. It would not surprise me at all if it's bent. Thanks for the link so I can see what I'm looking for.

Keep in mind, your LCA's are probably OK. (Bushings may be worn but not bent.) It's the mounting bracket and the adjustment tab where the LCA attaches to your rig that would be bent. Keep us posted...
