Field Monitor Unit Install questions

Cause I would spend a lot of time searching the Japanese auctions and by the time I paid for the auction and all the shipping fees there wasn't much to be made off them to justify the time spent. I don't have a business, I was just grabbing them cause for a short while it was fun :/

this is understandable. Please post more pics of JDM stuff. At this point what other options are out there? thanks @Chim

Ah, i see, any insite to my questions.

I don't know about the barometer hookup. Mine is the temp reading and the unit I used had a sensor with it. So I had to run wires for that along with the other ones you listed. I didn't see dimming as an issue since this unit has its own backlit on/ off switch on face.

If you search there are whole threads on this forum dedicated to JDM accessories you can search for :)
Be warned though.. its a slippery slope to spending more $$$$

Lol! I see what you mean. Your 3rd gen is badass by the way! the spoiler from Burtman or is that a Surf one? thanks for the info!

Thank you!

I got super lucky and found a legit JDM spoiler that was color matched with all mounting hardware. I am not sure that would ever happen again for me! It mounts with no drilling. I think the Burtman one requires drilling and bolting.

Nice Build Thread Chim, read through the entire process and recovery process, glad you where able to make good outta the bad, I have to say I'd do the exact same including collecting every metric nut and bolt that's easy to get to and might be usable lol, suprising how useful all that hardware becomes, and I think your new 4R is very tastefully and well put together.

Ya the no temp gauge in the newer Hilux surf FMU is what is confusing me, part for Hilux Surf ambient temp is different than the USDM ambient temp for digital climate control which is why I'm wondering if it is dual purpose for barometer readings since it's a different part and I think it needs a temp gauge to give accurate Baro readings, and then I'm thinking frig is there a different Hilux surf sensor for the no temp gauge FMU and digital climate control or did the have 2 different ambient temp sensors or tie into one,.. I know wind could effect the Baro pressure readings inside the cab if the barometer doesn't have an external sensor but maybe it's a mute point?? Thinking I'll run the extra temp wires while I'm at it test it, and if I need the Hilux temp sensor I'll be able to string the wires the rest of the way and buy the Hilux sensor, just seems odd to me to need the temp sensor since it doesn't display temp..

I have no idea how to setup what you are dealing with but I would def run the temp sensor wires while you are at it just in case since it will already be apart!

And, I agree about the nuts and bolts.. its exactly what I did. I now have a good collection :)

For reference we are talking about this FMU, with no temp display, Ive come to the conclusion it should be wired the same, with the same Hilux Surf Ambient temp sensor, and leave the USDM Ambient temp sensor in place for the Climate control Temp display, again weird I would need 2 Temp sensors is all, Can't see newer Hilux Surfs with digital Climate Control doing this, seem redundant....

Sorry about the pic sizing.

The barometric sensor is inside the FMU unit. The temp sensor up front is a simple two-wire NTC thermistor, just like the ambient temp sensor for HVAC. They may have different resistance curves - and the circuit reading the temp can't 'share' a sensor with another circuit - so that's the need for a separate sensor. If you need the plug for the FMU temp sensor, you can use the one for the stock ambient air sensor slightly modified. (I did that on mine, used the stock wiring/plug already run on the fender harness of my SR5, then pinned the stock wiring harness on the dash side of that connector)

That's what I've been hoping, do I need the wires and sensor if this FMU has no temp reading display?, it is from a Hilux Surf with digital Climate control and ambient outside temp reading on the climate control not the FMU, that's why I keep asking myself why so many pins why the need for a different temp sensor for the Hilux unless it is used by the FMU with or without temp display for Baro readings, it seems to me you need to know the temp to have an accurate Barometeric reading, so I would need the second temp sensor for this FMU to work properly, since mine is a 99Limited with digital climate control and outside temp display. Wish the OP was around, I realize he installed the "temp" sensor, but again he has no temp display reading on the FMU, so they must share data at least for accurate Baro readings? I realize it's a simple 2 wire connection. And I have a parts 4Runner to scavenge, there are the same plugs utilized in different locations for different purposes on a 4R that match the FMU and FMU "temp" sensor.

From my experience the single button for the sunroof control is an indication that it's a Barometer.
Two button sunroof control has the Outside Temperature.
But if there is no sunroof it's impossible to tell without hooking up the wiring.

Ok, maybe I'm over thinking it, I assumed Baro readings needed temp readings to adjust for pressure variance since the 2 are directly related to be accurate(temp effects pressure as does the altimeter for accurate Baro readings, and so would opening a window driving down the highway so perhaps a mute point again), and inside the cab would effect temp thus the need for outside temp for a FMU that doesn't display outside temp, and since the temp pins are on the plug it needs that data and makes the adjustment accordingly on the circuit board in the FMU, thus the need for a temp sensor on a FMU that has no temp display, maybe I'm all wet and over thinking it, so I just ordered the Hilux Temp sensor 83482-35010 so I have it, otherwise with no temp display what else is it needed for on this FMU. This FMU has no temp display like all the single sunroof button FMU's AFAIK, which makes sense because they went to the digital climate control with the outside temp display in it. I'll let everyone know how the install goes when I get it in my hands and all tied up. This later version FMU is a perfect match for a 99LTD basically in everyway, colour, fit, sunroof function and plug.

Everything you posted about barometric pressure makes an assumption. That assumption is that the barometric pressure readout isn't simply giving the pressure as read and is instead trying to correct the reading to a sea level barometric pressure. I'm not saying you are wrong about that, but I don't think Toyota spent the money to give the electronics in these that capability.

the field monitor with outside temp reading was only up to July 1998. After that, the digital climate control was introduced.
However, it may be possible that the option is still there but without the external temp sensor although there was a change in the part number of the field monitor to coincide with the loss of the temp sensor.

good luck!!

Yeah, way overthinking it. Any temperature adjustment to a barometer is needed when using a barometer (instrument) - but that would be taken care of with the chip/sensor that is used internally in the FMU. Outside temp is unrelated to inside temp and couldn't be used for any adjustments anyway. Actual barometer (ambient pressure) is unrelated to temperature, as I stated above.

Also, there is no separate altimeter... it is all barometer based. That's what the altitude up/down buttons are for - to correct for the barometer-based altitude errors.

Got it, you are correct, the unit works fine, so I ran 4 wires and 3 wires where for no reason and bought the temp sensor for nothing, awesome.. I like the unit to stay bright so I grounded the "dim illumination" green wire so the unit would stay bright with marker and headlights on, live and learn I'll do a simpler write up once I'm done everything else I'm working on. I posted my own topic, looking for an alternative VSS on the driver side of a 99', thinking maybe the RRDIFFLOCK green/orange 5mph safety wire...
Thanks for all your help, sorry to ask so many questions over such a simple install.

That's a good location to pick it up. Also, the back side of the gauge cluster (where the signal actually comes from) would be a good location to find the VSS wire.

I have LEDs in my FMU and it (basically) doesn't dim with the headlights. The FMU is dimmed a fixed amount (kinda like the "D" light on the gear indicator) with a dropping resistor and the LEDs don't draw enough current to be dimmed through it... I find it a bit too bright at night now and am deciding between changing the dropping resistor or going back to incandescent bulbs...

Excellent, really don't like pulling clusters although easy they don't like to be disturbed from my experience. I'll give the green/orange strip wire at the RRDIFFLOCK control a try for VSS and do a simpler write up if all works out, figure worst case it won't work or best case it will start working at 5mph which is ok by me. Ya so the "Illumination" wire is actually a ground (this was mentioned in one write up that it was ground based connection) to dim illumination in the FMU, exactly as you discribe the "D" in the cluster on 99+, unlike what I thought reading the 5or6 other write ups. So really you could skip that wire and ground it at the FMU mount since you can shut the display off at night if needed., 12V grey wire and switched 12v red wire at the sunroof, so in my case I only needed to run the VSS as there is no temp, live and learn. Thanks for the support feedback and handholding lol
