Field Monitor Unit Install questions

Excellent, really don't like pulling clusters although easy they don't like to be disturbed from my experience. I'll give the green/orange strip wire at the RRDIFFLOCK control a try for VSS and do a simpler write up if all works out, figure worst case it won't work or best case it will start working at 5mph which is ok by me.

The VSS signal only (visually) makes the little lines move - but at a constant rate. I think it is also used for the compass (so the direction doesn't change while you are stationary, and maybe for the calibration procedure).

Well that worked beauty, connected/spliced the FMU speed sensor wire Blue @ FMU plug to the RRDIFFLOCK Green/orange wire and now my little bars indicate I'm moving at any speed, (ironically if you had the factory plug and pig tail male side of the FMU plug it turns into a green/orange wire)Compass works, Baro works, Altimeter works, and this unit has no temp display so technically I only needed one wire for speed sensor ran, I fished and tucked my wire(s) so no grab handle removal needed, everything else I needed can be connected to the sunroof leads.

FMU Plug wires spliced to vehicle list.

BLU to Green/Orange DIFFLOCK ECU
BLK to Black/Red sunroof
RED to Grey sunroof
RED/WHT to Red sunroof
GREEN to ground bolt/screw at sunroof
(illumination stays bright all the time even with marker and driving lights)

And life is good.

From my experience the single button for the sunroof control is an indication that it's a Barometer.
Two button sunroof control has the Outside Temperature.
But if there is no sunroof it's impossible to tell without hooking up the wiring.

Not to revive a dead thread but can anybody maybe shine some light on this - the difference between the one and two button units? It can't be as stated above, since I've seen the two button units have every combination that it can (baro/alt, temp/baro, temp/alt) - compare here and here for example. I'd like to know if there's anything critical between the two before I purchase one
I'd really like to have/retain the cleaner look of one button but they seem much, much rarer :noidea:

It shouldn't really matter if you purchase a two button one as all you would do is swap in your existing single button control and light lens.

Yeah that's what I saw most doing, thanks for the reply anyways! Already got my FMU ordered and should be here from Russia by early to mid October. Got one that's sparkling clean and has all the connectors in place, nearly bought one with clipped wires for $100 less but caught myself last minute :whoo:

Got it early! Sellers camera was good about hiding this odd thing going on in the corner of the screen and some tiny cracks in the black plastic, but it shouldn't be that noticeable especially at night
Has no one really been able to hook up the tilt/inclinometer function working? Some say because they can't find a lead that it "doesn't exist" in a way, but that can't be; the fact that the unit is able to display the information means there HAS to be a way for it to receive that information in the first place, otherwise it would simply be for looks which doesn't seem up anyones alley, especially Toyota's. The way I see it is the connection for it is hidden somewhere in the main harness that everyone scraps, or it perhaps shares a lead usually? Shouldn't someone with a Surf have figured this out by now? :noidea:

i don't think it has the inclinometer. IIRC, it has the compass, altimeter and barometer.
about the screen, it seems that the polarizing filter is starting to show it's age. there are some videos in youtube on how to replace the polarizing filter in the LED TVs. it should be similar. i think you also need to determine the orientation of the filter, not sure about it though

What's that little L90-45-0-45-90R doodad below the compass then?

that's part of the compass. L = left and R = right. it lights up when you're calibrating the compass

The one pictured above has no tilt/inclinometer. Even if it did, the sensors would be built-in for that...
